The model described is closely imitative of the natural estuarine environment, yet is simple in construction and easy to maintain. The system is self contained and requires no additional nutrient input. The current model has been in continuous operation for 10 months without replacement of the original sediment, and the sediment structure and major sediment meiofauna have been maintained.

Nitrogen assimilation is the most readily utilized source of conductance changes when pitching yeast is grown in a glucose‐based medium. A simple growth medium comprising yeast nitrogen base, in which nitrogen is supplied as ammonium sulphate, and glucose gave good growth but little change in conductance. Inclusion of a succinate buffer in the medium to remove protons liberated as a result of nitrogen uptake produced a large decrease in conductance and detection times that correlated well with enumeration of yeast by plate counting. Neosartorya fischeriascospores were subjected to a dry heat treatment at 95°C, 50% relative humidity for 30 and 60 min. The effect of the temperature of the recovery buffer (0–02% v/v Tween 80 in Butterfield's Buffer) was evaluated. As the temperature of the buffer increased, there was an exponential increase in the number of survivors, followed by a levelling off and, in some cases, a decrease. This behaviour may indicate temperature activation of dormant ascospores or reactivation of ascospores rendered dormant by the dry heat treatment. The attachment of14C‐choline‐labelled mixed rumen protozoa to barley strawin vitrowas not significantly affected when bacteria prepared from rumen fluid were added to the incubation mixture. Six wild fungal strains,Trichoderma viride, T. harzianum, Gliocladium virens, Aspergillus terreus, A. nigerandTiarosporella phaseolina, isolated from decomposed jute stacks and diseased jute stem, were tested for their cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic activities and compared withT. reeseiMCG 77. A monoclonal antibody to the trichothecene mycotoxin diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS) was produced by a hybridoma, designated 2E5. Both Col‐and ColV, I‐K94+strains ofEscherichia coli, grown at pH 7–0, failed to grow after relatively short periods of exposure to pH 3·0 or 3·5. After growth in exposure medium initially at pH 5·0, both strains were almost unaffected by exposure to such acid pH values. Addition of catalase to nutrient agar only slightly increased plating efficiency after acid treatment and very slightly reduced the difference in survival, after acid treatment, between organisms grown from pH 5·0 and those grown from pH 7·0.
