摘要:
Streptococcus mutanswas cultivated in media containing sucrose (10–40%, w/v) and the sucrose induced changes in chemical and physical properties of its membrane lipids were investigated. The degree of unsaturation in the fatty acids of both total lipid and glycolipid fractions decreased when the sucrose concentration was increased. An electron spin resonance spectroscopic study revealed the reduction of membrane lipid fluidity by adding sucrose to the growth medium. Liposomes prepared from membrane lipids of bacteria grown with sucrose showed less osmotic volume changes than those of bacteria grown without sucrose. These results suggest that modification of membrane lipid composition, fluidity and osmosis‐resistance have an important role in the ability ofStreptococcus mutansto grow in sucrose at high concentrati

Naphthalene utilizing bacteria were isolated from several sites above and below the discharge from a coking plant. The distribution of the bacteria was influenced by the effluent. Of these isolates, 11·4% obtained from the effluent discharge site, contained plasmids. No conjugal transfer of naphthalene utilizing ability was observed in over 1000 matings. Impedance detection times were compared with traditional plating methods for enumerating antibiotic‐resistant strains ofSalmonella stanley, Salm. thompsonandSalm. infantisgrown in laboratory medium and pork slurry. The correleation of log10counts of salmonellas with detection times was highly significant (r= ‐0·96 for broth andr= ‐0·94 for slurries. The confidence limits (± og101·0 for broth and ± log101·65 for slurry) indicated that detection times could reliably be used as a rapid means of enumerating salmonellas when large numbers of counts of known strains are required for growth studies. Use of antibiotic‐resistant strains also permitted their selective detection by impedance from the natural spoilage flora of pork slurry when the same antibiotics were incorporated in the det
