Neocallimastix patriciarumwas successfully frozen in liquid media containing 5% dimethylsuphoxide as cryoprotectant. Initial freezing and storage for 24 h in solid CO2before transfer to liquid N2was necessary for survival. Long‐term storage under liquid N2, solid CO2and at ‐ 80°C was tested; only storage in liquid N2proved successful for periods in excess of several months. Analysis of metabolic end‐products and electron microscopy indicated that no morphological or biochemical changes had occurred in cultures preserved for 1 year.Piromonas communisand a recent isolate from the ovine rumen were preserved under the same conditions. A monoclonal antibody (McAb) specific for ochratoxin A (OA) has been developed. The McAb has low cross‐reactivity for ochratoxin α, although cross‐reactivity with the synthetic ochratoxin C was high. The density of epiphytic bacteria on (1) leaves, (2) stems and petioles, and (3) whole shoots of submergedNasturtium officinale, Apium nodiflorumandGlyceria fluitanswas determined from January to June 1984 in a calcareous stream in North Humberside. The density on leaves was less than on stems and petioles; reasons for this are suggested. The density on all three species decreased from late January to February‐March and then increased to June.
