The capacity of protein‐extracted lucerne fibres to bind the cellulases of the mesophilic fungusTrichoderma reesei, and the thermophilic actinomyceteThermomonospora curvata, was determined to evaluate the fibre as a cellulase‐recycling vehicle during bioconversion processes. Adsorption of fungal and bacterial cellulase complexes was minimal at the pH optima (5‐0 and 6‐2 respectively) for fibre conversion to soluble sugars. Lowering of incubation temperature to 3°C enhanced adsorption of fungal cellulases, but had no effect on bacterial cellulase adsorption. The uptake of noxythiolin by a urinary isolate ofEscherichia coliwas examined initially at 37°C but the adsorption isotherm was complicated by the concomitant degradation of the compound. When drug adsorption was investigated at 4°C, to reduce the degradation rate of the compound, it was observed that noxythiolin was taken up by the urinary isolate in a linear fashion. Spores ofBacillus subtilisSA22 harvested after 22 d incubation on nutrient agar at 30°C were more resistant to 0–04% peracetic acid at 20°C than spores harvested following 2 d incubation. Similarly, spores ofB. subtilis globigiiB17, harvested after 7 d incubation on a sporulation agar were up to 10 times less resistant to 0.04% peracetic acid at 20°C than spores harvested after 35 d incubation.
