An NH4OH extract from seed shell ofPinus koraiensisSieb. et Zucc. inhibited infections of rotavirus and enterovirus in cultured rhesus monkey kidney MA 104 cells. Antiviral activity of the extract was attributable to interference with virus adsorption, rather than to inhibition of virus replication after adsorption.

Cows' milk was inoculated withca103and 107cfu/mlListeria monocytogenes.After fermentation at 42°C for 0–5 h, the yogurt was stored at 4°C. Low and high inocula survived for 48 h and 7 d, respectively;L. monocytogenescells were not detectable by direct plating or cold‐enrichment after 5 and 15 d, respectively. In low inoculum samples, initial pH at the time of refrigeration was 4·9; the final pH at the time of last sampling was 4·2. In the samples with high inoculum the pH decreased from 5·

Fungal growth was quantified during Indonesian rice tapé fermentation using an agar‐film technique following sample homogenization for 1 min at 25000 rev/min. After 72 h fermentation, mould hyphal length was 0·68 km/g, yeast hyphal length 2·1 km/g and the numbers of mould chlamydospores and single yeast cells were 14 times 105/g and 5·1 times 107/g respectively. The estimated fungal biomass in rice tapé after 72 h was 25 mg/g dry weight with 62% of this being mould hyphae, 24% mould chlamydospores, 13% yeast hyphae and 1% yeast

We describe a new method for determining the biotype ofAgrobacterium tumefaciensstrains, based on differential motility in a medium adjusted to different pH levels. Motility of biotype I increases with increasing pH. That of biotype II slightly decreases, but the cells remain motile; the motility of biotype III decreases and the cells become non‐motile. The assay is able to distinguish between strains of all three biotypes within 2 d, and can be applied to relatively large numbers of isolates. Thus it is more rapid and efficient than the frequently used biochemical biotype test

Ubiquinone profiles of ninePenicilliumstrains were shown to be heterogeneous: Each contained ubiquinones Q9, Q10H2, and Q12, and twoP. chrysogenumstrains also contained Q10. One of two isolates of the thirdP. chrysogenumstrain lacked Q10H2. The analytical method (a) used mild extraction, (b) was experimentally undemanding, (c) involved inexpensive equipment, and (d) was rapid. It is the first report of the use of this method with fungi.
