Coliform group bacteria,Staphylococcus aureus, salmonella and proteus were not detected in four samples ofkusayagravy, a kind of brine used for the production of special salt‐dried fish in Japan.Vibrio parahaemolyticusat a level of 101/ml was presumptively detected only in one sample. When inoculated into the gravy at a level of 107‐108/ml, none of these bacteria grew.Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Escherichia coliandProteus morganiirapidly decreased in number and were not detectable after 5 d.Staphylococcus aureusnumbers reduced only 1 log cycle after incubation for 7 d in the gravy. Repair‐deficient strains ofEscherichia colicarryingpolAIorrecAmutations were more alkali‐sensitive than was their repair‐proficient parent but, like strain 1829 ColV, I‐K94, they showed habituation to alkali (induction of increased resistance) when grown at pH 9.0. Occurrence of such increased alkali resistance in therecAmutant implies that habituation to alkali does not depend on induction of SOS‐related repair mechanisms. Bacteria indicating faecal contamination, cell‐culturable enteroviruses and hepatitis A virus (HAV) were investigated in sea‐water and in mussels exposed in an unpolluted marine environment, over a 7‐month period with two samplings per month. Of the 16 mussel samples examined, none contained cell‐culturable enteroviruses, four showed a low‐level contamination by HAV and two did not conform to the current bacteriological norms. Spraying barley plants with three substituted cadaverines (0.5 mmol/l) resulted in substantial reductions in both powdery mildew and brown rust infections. Two unusual hydroxy acids have recently been described in broth cultures of certain anaerobes. Based on these and other known metabolic end‐products, an identification scheme from quantitative gas chromatography for commonFusobacteriumspecies was established. Seventy‐five sputa and 10 faeces of human origin were examined for organisms capable of growing in carbon monoxide (CO). Specimens were plated onto a buffered agar medium containing trace vitamins, and incubated (2–4 weeks) in 60% v/v CO as the sole source of carbon and energy. All specimens yielded growth except for three sputa; many individual colonies were shown to comprise at least two different organisms. While no recognized carboxydotrophs were found, presumptive identification revealed that streptococci, staphyloccoci, coliform bacilli, yeasts and moulds were all represented. Using a specific enzyme test, evidence for CO dehydrogenase activity was found in a significant proportion of mixed and purified cultures. A thin layer chromatography system is described for the analysis of fusaric acid and other secondary metabolites, to assist in the identification of pathogenic races ofFusarium oxysporumf. sp.vasinfectum. There were differences in the metabolite profiles of the races grown on different media.

Staphylococcus aureusstrains with similar biotype characteristics occur in meat products and in the anterior nares of workers in slaughterhouses and meat‐processing plants. Such strains are rare in humans not in frequent contact with meats. The biotype is staphylokinase‐negative, β‐haemolysin‐negative, bovine plasma coagulase‐negative, crystal violet type A and Protein A‐positive.
