The ability of 13 strains ofSalmonella, representing 12 serotypes, to grow in a tryptone‐yeast extract‐glucose medium, acidified with HC1 to pH values between 3.80 and 5.60 at intervals of 0.20 units, has been investigated. During incubation at 30°C, growth occurred at minimum pH values of 3.8–4.0 in 1–3 d. At 20°C, growth occurred at minimum pH values of 3.8–4.2 in 3–5 d. The production ofp‐cresol byClostridium difficileon a variety of agar basal media was investigated using gas‐liquid chromatography. Growth of the obligately methylotrophic Bacterium B6/2 in continuous culture was inhibited when the mineral salts‐methylamine medium was supplied through silicone rubber tubing which had been autoclaved more than 50 times. The growth inhibition was removed when the medium was supplied through new silicone rubber tubing. Growth in small‐scale batch cultures was delayed or inhibited after the medium passed through the former tubing but not when it had passed through the latter. A new selective medium forFusariumspecies has been developed using Czapek‐Dox agar (CZ) containing the fungicides iprodione (3 mg/1) and dicloran (2 mg/1). This new medium (CZID) is selective against numerous species ofAlternaria, Epicoccum, Penicilliumand mucoraceous fungi. CZID was compared with CZ using samples of barley, malt, sorghum, bean and pea.Fusariumspecies produced large and easily recognizable colonies on CZID while isolates ofAlternaria, EpicoccumandRhizopuswere significantly restricted on CZID compared with their growth on CZ.
