Vibrio anguillarumstrain E‐383a, isolated from sea water, accumulated a considerable amount ofN,N‘‐diacetylchitobiose when it was cultivated in a medium containing colloidal chitin. The maximum conversion of chitin to chitobiose was found to be 40·3%. The rate of chitobiose accumulation was accelerated after the cessation of bacterial growth. Small amounts ofN‐acetylglucosamine andN,N’,N‐triacetylchitotriose were also accumulated but no other saccharides were detected. These results may suggest that strain E‐383a produces an exo‐type chitinase which successively hydrolyses the glycosidic linkages of chitin into biose units. A detailed characterization of four representativeLactobacillusisolates from the rumen was undertaken after tests with API CH50 kits had indicated that they differed from currently recognized species. These isolates are shown to be related toLactobacillus fermentum, although they differ from the type and reference strains of this species in sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis patterns and electrophoretic mobility of LDH. It seemed that certain heterofermentative lactobacilli could give negative results for some fermentation tests (particularly fructose and lactose) in API kits, whilst showing good growth on the same substrates in conventional tests.

Changes in the pH value and lactic acid content of the uninoculated, cultured Nigerian whole milk product, ‘Nono’, during incubation at room temperature (27°± 2°C) for 120 h were monitored. An aqueous extract of trypsin‐degraded fish waste is a good substitute for beef extract in culture media. Polynoxylin (Anaflex R) was investigated for antimicrobial activities ancillary to its known cidal and static effects. Significant reductions in adherence ofCandida albicansblastospores (oral strain) to human buccal epithelial cells were observed following polynoxylin treatment. Viable and non‐viable African green monkey kidney (Vero) cells after treatment withClostridium perfringensenterotoxin (CPE) followed by simultaneous double staining with fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and propidium iodide (PI) were counted with a flow cytometer (FCM). Within 1 min the FCM analysed 10 000 Vero cells in a sample for viability. After treatment of Vero cells with CPE for 60 min and staining with FDA‐PI for 5 min, a reproducible dose‐response curve was obtained between 25 and 400 ng/ml of CPE and percentage viable cell numbers. The presence of lipoteichoic acid (LTA) in plasma membrane and released adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) preparations ofStreptococcus lactissubsp.cremorisHA was studied by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS‐PAGE). The membrane preparation gave two spots with periodic acid Schiff's (PAS) staining. The reference LTA revealed one CBB stainable band with MW 21 500, and was detected as a characteristic yellow spot in the molecular weight area 14 000–20 900 with silver staining and was also stainable with PAS.
