TheLactobacillusmicroflora in the faeces of two infants was followed in the days after weaning. All colonies isolated at the highest dilution wereLactobacillus caseisubsp.casei. They were identified to strain level by plasmid profile, total soluble cell protein and surface cell protein pattern. Two dominant strains ofL. caseisubsp.caseiwere identified on successive days, which suggests that these were permanent members of the infant bowel microflora.

The floc‐forming ability of highly flocculent wine yeasts isolated from musts and wines was tested for susceptibility to heat and proteinase treatments. Four phenotypes were discriminated by treatments with pronase, proteinase K, trypsin and chymotrypsin. The most common phenotype was irreversibly lost only upon treatment with pronase, whereas the floc‐forming ability was resistant to the action of proteinase K, trypsin and chymotrypsin. Another flocculent phenotype, represented by only one strain 6789, was resistant to the action of all proteolytic enzymes. The effect of high temperature on floc‐forming ability in the presence or absence of Ca2+ions resulted in all the possible combinations and did not aid further general discrimination of flocculent phenotypes inSaccharomyces cerevisiaestrains from

The effects of various gas phases of CO2, CH4, H2and O2(in N2) on the metabolismin vitroof rumen ciliate protozoa were monitored in terms of changes in the rates of production of acetate, butyrate and propionate. Different atmospheres resulted in considerable differences in the proportions of volatile fatty acids produced by the protozoa, suggesting that the type of headspace gas used in studies of these protozoa can profoundly influence the results obtained.

When grown under glasshouse conditions, peanut plants can be invaded byAspergillus flavusandA. parasiticusfrom soil or seed as early as the time of emergence from the soil. Systemic infections may become established. The fungi can spread throughout the plants, though prevalence is higher in parts nearer the soil.Aspergillus flavusis more invasive thanA. parasiticusunder these conditions.

SpecificTn5sequences inserted in the genome ofEnterobacter agglomeranswere detected inEcoRI digested DNA directly recovered from soil 70 d after its inoculation with the bacteria, when these were no longer culturable on agar medium. A new method of DNA extraction from soil was used. No amplification of DNA sequences by PCR was needed.

Methods are evaluated for the preservation of the hyperthermophilePyrococcus furiosus. The use of glass capillary tubes stored over liquid nitrogen with dimethyl sulphoxide appears to be the preferred method of preservation. Sixteen isolates of penicillin‐resistantStreptococcus pneumoniae(penicillin‐resistant pneumococci, PRP) serotype 23 with identical antibiograms were examined by pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PYMS) as a possible method of rapid inter‐strain comparison. Some of the isolates were from well‐documented hospital outbreaks of PRP infection whilst others were sporadic isolates. The results were in good agreement with the epidemiological data and showed that PYMS can distinguish strains within a single serotype ofStrep. pneumoniae. Pyrolysis mass spectrometry is an attractive technique for the identification and management of nosocomial infections with penicillin‐resistant strains ofStrep. p

The effect of aqueous leaf extracts of four plants,Argemone mexicana, Cyperus rotundus, Euphorbia hirtaandSolanum nigrum, on growth and aflatoxin production byAspergillus flavuswas studied in SMKY liquid medium. All the plants inhibited aflatoxin production. No correlation between the growth of the fungus and aflatoxin synthesis was observed. The influence of these plants on the ratio of aflatoxin B1to G1is discussed.

Selected phenotypic characters, melting temperature of chromosomal DNA and DNA sequence homology have been determined for 10 strains ofThermoactinomyces thalpophilusand reference strains ofT. vulgaris, T. putidus, T. sacchariand‘T. candidus’. All strains conformed to their respective species descriptions and all DNA base compositions were between 48·7 and 52·2 mol% guanine plus cytosine. The‘T. candidus’strain was phenotypically indistinguishable from theT. vulgarisneotype strain. Ten strains ofT. thalpophilusshowed greater than 60% sequence homology with DNA fromT. thalpophilusCUB 808. TheT. vulgaris, T. sacchariandT. putidusstrains shared little DNA homology with each other or theT. thalpophilusstrains.
