A modified decarboxylase assay medium (DCA medium) was used for studying the production of biogenic amines byLeuconostoc oenosDSM 20252 and two strains ofLactobacillus buchneri(Lb14 and St2A). The DCA medium contained histidine, lysine, ornithine and tyrosine as precursors of the respective biogenic amines. Under the experimental conditions both strains ofLact. buchneriproduced>90% of the maximum amount of histamine within 24 h. Only tyramine was produced byLeuc. oenosDSM 20252. accountine for 88% of the maximum theoretical amount within 24 h.

A modified direct epifluorescent filter technique (DEFT) for the detection and enumeration of visible yeast in fruit‐flavoured yoghurt is described. The method involves an initial enrichment in oxytetracycline glucose yeast peptone broth (OGYP, 30d̀C/24, 48 h), prefiltration prior to DEFT and use of the vital stain Viablue 1. Additional yoghurt samples were subjected to prolonged incubation at 12d̀C or spiked withKluyveromyces fragilis. When DEFT was compared with the plate count, regression and correlation coefficients of 1.12 and 0.85 respectively were obtained for values above the sensitivity threshold of DEFT (103cells/ml). The use of an enrichment stage (OGYP, 30D̀C/24 h) enabled, by calculation, a theoretical minimum yeast contamination level of 7 yeast cells/g in the original yoghurt to be detected assuming the cells exhibit no lag phase of gr

The primary interaction of taurultam with both Escherichia coli (isolated from a urinary tract infection) and mammalian erythrocytes was studied at 37d̀C. UsingE. colias the adsorbate, the adsorption of taurultam was observed to follow a constant partitioning (C) isotherm. However, the interaction between taurultam and mammalian erythrocytes was shown to follow a Langmuirian (L) pattern. SixLegionellastrains were characterized with the BIOLOGTMidentification system. A specific metabolic pattern for the sixLegionellastrains was observed after 24 h. Several positive reactions were detected intermittently in all six strains tested. The possible application of the BIOLOG system for identification ofLegionellaspp. from environmental or clinical samples is discussed.
