Proteins in the peribacteroid space (PBS) between the bacteroid outer membrane and the peribacteroid membrane in root nodules ofPisum sativumandVicia fabainduced byRhizobium leguminosarumPRE were analysed by two‐dimensional (2‐D) gel electrophoresis. Most of the detectable proteins were found to migrate to identical positions; however the level of accumulation of some of these appear to be determined by the host plant. When a differentR. leguminosarumstrain (RB1) was used to inoculateP. sativum, the majority of the isolated PBS proteins were found to migrate in the 2‐D gel to identical positions as those of the other two combinations (R. leguminosarumPRE xP. sativumandR. leguminosarumPRE xV.

Electron donor‐limited chemostat enrichments were used to isolate sulphate‐reducing bacteria (SRB) from human faeces. 摘要:
Ultraviolet light irradiation of bacterial spores in the presence of hydrogen peroxide has been shown to produce synergistic kills when compared with ultraviolet light (u.v.) and hydrogen peroxide used sequentially. This use in combination has been patented for the commercial sterilization of packaging before filling with UHT‐processed products. Previous results have shown that lamps producing u.v. light with a maximum output at about 254 nm were extremely effective. Results obtained using a Synchrotron radiation source to produce a narrow band of irradiation now shows that the greatest kill of spores ofBacillus subtilisin the presence of hydrogen peroxide is obtained with radiation at ˜270 nm. Such results suggest that the action of the u.v. light is not directly on the spore DNA but may be related to the production of free hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxi

Poultry processing plant equipment was sampled forEscherichia colieither sequentially during single processing runs or once weekly for 6 weeks. The biotyping of the isolations revealed a heterogeneousE. colipopulation. The majority of biotypes were identified on one occasion only and never on more than three occasions under both sampling regimes. Although a proportion of the biotypes were recovered from equipment after cleaning, it was concluded that thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures should controlE. colicontamination of slaughterhouse equipment.

Protein profiles of whole cells ofBacteriodes ureolyticusgrown in the presence or absence of the iron chelator desferrioxamine mesylate (Desferal) were compared. Each of four strains produced novel proteins of molecular weights 19, 25 and 41 kilodaltons (kDa) under conditions of reduced iron availability. Novel proteins of molecular weights 32, 52 and 58 kDa were also detected although there was interstrain variation in their expression. Outer membranes from three of the strains grown on iron‐depleted medium also contained novel proteins with molecular weights of approximately 25, 41 and 52 kDa. When organisms were grown on medium containing Desferal saturated with excess iron, the novel proteins were not detected indicating that their expression was regulated by the level of available iron in the mediu
