The effect of sodium biselenite on the growth of nine isolates fromAspergillus, including an afiatoxin‐producing strain ofAspergillus parasiticus, was studied on plates of Czapek Dox agar and in the chemically defined medium of Reddyet al.(1971). Selenite (40 μ/ml) causes some inhibition of the growth of all the isolates tested and induces the formation of an orange pigment in the mycelium of all species exceptA. niger. Dithiothreitol (DTT)‐treated spores ofClostridium perfringenswere much more sensitive to lysis by H2O2in the presence of Cu2+than untreated spores. Lysis was greatly inhibited by hydroxyl radical (.OH) scavengers such as thiourea, dimethylthiourea and dimethylsulfoxide, suggesting that lysis of spores by H2O2involves formation of OH by Cu2+‐catalysed decomposition of the peroxide. DTT‐treated spores took up Cu2+at almost the same rate and extent as did isolated cortical fragments. Lyophilization, desiccation on pumice stone and storage in dilute glycerol at‐20d̀C were compared for the preservation ofLactobacilluscultures. After storage for two years, 73% of the lyophilized cultures were viable. Desiccation on pumice stone gave erratic results and is not recommended. Spheroplasts of variousProteusspecies could be induced by cefoxitin in nutrient broth alone or in broth containing 0–33 mol/l sucrose and 4 times 10‐3 mol/l magnesium sulphate. Spheroplasts induced in the latter medium were lysed when diluted into water, but osmotically stable if transferred to broth or other appropriate menstrua. The effects of colistin on some strains ofProteus mirabilis, P. morganii and P. vulgarisare described. Two strains ofP. mirabilis, NCTC 60 and NCTC 4199, took up greater amounts of colistin from solution than did the other strains. Pretreatment of strains 60 and 4199 resulted in osmotic instability and in increased susceptibility to Tris and deoxycholate. Colistin‐induced lysis in Tris could be overcome by means of 0–16 mol/l sodium chloride or 0–33 mol/l sucrose. Pre‐treated, but not control, cells of these two strains exposed to Tris (0–05 mol/l, pH 9) developed surface protuberance

An immunostaining method is described for the direct detection of mycobacterial lipid antigens on thin‐layer chromatograms, no prior purification of the crude lipid extract is required. A subset (n = 20) of 143 putativeVibriospp. isolated from surface seawater samples collected along a transect from Barbados to Puerto Rico to Bermuda were included in a numerical taxonomy study. Fourteen strains were identified asVibrio campbellii. It was concluded thatV. campbellii occursin the open ocean with high frequency, and probably represents an autochthonous species in surface waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
