The Spiral Plater System used for enumeration of bacteria was evaluated for the titration ofCarnpylobacterphages. Twelve phages of C.jejuniwere titrated using the conventional surface droplet technique, soft agar overlay‐pour plate technique, and the Spiral Plater System. Phage counts obtained by the three methods were similar but the Spiral Plater System showed greater precision than the other method

A Curvularia sp. isolated from soil was found to produce extracellular β‐glucosidase activity when grown in yeast extract, peptone, carboxymethylcellulose (YPC) medium. An initial medium pH of 6·5 and cultivation temperature of 30°C were found to be most suitable for high enzyme productivity. The pH and temperature optima for the enzyme were 4·0 and 70°C, respectively. Under these conditions, the enzyme exhibited a Km(0‐nitrophenyl‐β‐d‐glucoside) value of 0.20 mmol/l. During an investigation of the effect of protease inhibitors on the growth of Grampositive and ‐negative bacteria, commercial ovoinhibitor and ovomucoid were found to be strongly bactericidal. Both commercial inhibitors were fractionated by reversed phase chromatography and the bactericidal substance was identified as chicken egg white lysozyme. Lysozyme inhibited the growth of Gram‐negative bacteria without addition of complement or EDTA. 摘要:
Previous observations that the presence of caffeine could cause a reduction in the specific productivity of aflatoxins byAspergillus parasiticuswere confirmed. However, it was also shown that the reisolation of A.parasiticusfrom media containing caffeine as the sole source of nitrogen, provided a strain with a significantly reduced specific productivity even when grown in the absence of caffeine. This property has remained stable over several subcultures. The specific productivity of this strain is further reduced when it is grown in the presence of sub‐inhibitory concentrations of caffeine. Under normal culture conditions it appears to be indistinguishable from the parent strain except in the reduced specific productivity of aflatoxin
