摘要:
The tests based upon normalized sample spacings and analogous to the classical homogeneity of variances procedures are the simplest tests of exponentiality. Among these, Gnedenko's Q test (Gnedenko, Belyayev and Solovyev, 1969) is found to be superior against the monotone hazard rate alternative Weibull. In this note the normalized spacings are used in the same spirit but in conjunction with the bivariate F distribution to obtain a test of exponentiality which provides protection against a broad class of alternatives.

摘要:
The principal result of this paper is the discovery of an excellent approximation to the sampling distribution of the statistic used in the construction of Weibull tolerance bounds. The approximation is compared over a wide range of cases to Monte Carlo results and to two other recently derived approximations. In no case has it been found to be deficient.

摘要:
A distribution with one scale and two shape parameters is studied. The distribution can describe increasing (I), decreasing (D), constant and bathtub-shaped (B) failure rates. This motivates the working name, IDB distribution. The IDB distribution is motivated by mixtures of a set of IFR distributions but can also be given a competing risk interpretation. For mixed distributions a more general result on the initial slope of the failure rate is given. Asymptotic results for the ML estimation of survival probabilities are given, and when possible compared with ML estimation based on the Weibull, Rayleigh and exponential distributions. Also, the asymptotic gain from classifying failures into two categories is illustrated. One application to real data is given.

摘要:
Consonance sets are obtained by inverting inequalities for goodness-of-fit statistics which are considered as functions of the parameters of a model distribution. In this paper we present some evidence to indicate that the use of the Kolmogorov-Smimov statistic assures reasonable results for location and scale parameters. Specifically, the consonance sets obtained are convex and finite. The development also provides a method for set construction. An example shows that the discrete X2statistic does not in general yield convex sets.

摘要:
In many studies the experimenter has under consideration several (two or more) alternatives, and is studying them in order to determine which is the best (with regard to certain specified criteria of “goodness”). Such an experimenter does not wish basically to test hypotheses, or construct confidence intervals, or perform regression analyses (though these may be appropriate parts of his analysis); he does wish to select the best of several alternatives, and the major part of his analysis should therefore be directed towards this goal. It is precisely for this problem that ranking and selection procedures were developed. This paper presents an overview of some recent work in this field, with emphasis on aspects important to experimenters confronted with selection problems.

摘要:
The selection procedures used currently and since 1977 for award of the Frank Wilcoxon and Jack Youden prizes are described. Using real data from the 1976 awards competition, it is shown that different methods of combining judges' ratings would yield different winners, and that which procedure is best is not intuitively obvious. Finally it is shown how the current method was chosen on the basis of probability of correct selection considerations.

摘要:
In a recent article, Suich and Derringer (1977) presented a criterion for determining the adequacy of the regression model. Ellertoa (1978) generalized this procedure. Hill, Judge and Fomby (1978) presented an estimator which they incorrectly attribute to Suich and Derringer and then showed that this estimator is uniformly inferior to the James-Stein estimator. The purpose of this note is to distinguish between Suich and Derringer's recommendation of model adequacy and the problems of estimation.
