摘要:
The problem is to estimate the average probability of misclassifying an observation from a given population in the context of the two group classification problem when populations are univariate normal with unknown means and common known variance, and the rule is based on the linear discriminant function. Several estimators are compared with respect to asymptotic MSE and with respect to the distribution of the absolute error between estimator and parameter, and conclusions drawn about the best estimators.

摘要:
By formulating a statistical model forx-ray radiation count data obtained by scanning a portion of the celestial sphere, precise questions can be formulated concerning the best methods for detection and location of stellar x-ray sources and the measurement of the background strength. The mathematical model assumes a Poisson process for which the intensity is a function of the background, strength of the source, and area of the receptor illuminated thereby. This area is determined by the angle between the un-known position of the source and the pointing direction of the instrument. The maximum likelihood equations are derived to estimate the unknown parameters. Iteration procedures are obtained to facilitate their solution and shown to converge for reasonable samples. This model is applied to some data collected from a balloon-born scan of a portion of the celestial sphere reported in The Astrophysical Journal, 158, 207–218, (1969), by Bingham and Clark. This data is analysed using these methods and the results are reported.

摘要:
There are important fluctuations in instantaneous pollutant concentration at small distances from the roadway due to variability in vehicle spacings and emission rates. The pollutant concentration from a single-lane highway is represented as a two-sided filtered Markov renewal process. Explicit formulae for the filter or impact function and the average concentration are derived for isotropic Gaussian diffusion model with variances proportional to time or to time-squared. A numerical example for a single lane of rush-hour traffic yields coefficients of variation of about 20% at 20 meters from the roadway, for reasonable parameters.

摘要:
The analysis of data on aircraft instrument landing approaches showed that the deviations of the actual flight paths from a desred (ILS) flight path could not be described in statistical terms with normal probability distribution functions. It has been possible, however, to develop a special class of distribution functions which can be used in a mathematical model for such cases. It appears that the tails of these diskibution functions have a single-exponential character. Their application to data on aircraft instrument landing approaches is discussed and illustrated. A simple physical inter-pretation can be given for the derived formulae.

摘要:
In a recent paper, Tiao and Guttman (1967) discussed the use of adjusted residuals to analyze the behaviour in moderate to large samples of the premium and protection of Anscombe's rule (herein designated as theA(k)-rule) when sampling is from theN(μ, σ) distribution, μ is to be estimated;and wherekoutlying observations are suspected of being spurious (k= 1 and 2). A discussion of two other rules, Semi-Winsorization (S(1)-rule) and Winsorization (W(1)-rule), is given in Guttman and Smith (1969, 1971). This paper investigates the behaviour, for moderate to largen, of theA(k)),S(k)) andW(k))- rules,k= 1 and 2. To do this, we define rules based on adjusted residuals, which we shall denote as theAk,SkandWkrules. Expressions for the premium and protection of theSkandWkrules are derived, and contrasted with these characteristics of theAkrule, obtained by Tiao and Guttman (1967).

摘要:
This note is concerned with estimation in the two parameter exponential distribution using a variation of the ordinary method of moments in which the second order moment estimating equation is replaced with an equation involving expected value of the first. order statistic. Estimators obtained are found to be identical with best linear unbiased estimators (BLUE) obtained by Sarhan [5] which in turn are identical to minimum variance unbiased estimators (MVUE) obtained by Epstein and Sobel [1].
