In dissecting a mixture of two multivariate normal distributions with a common covariance matrix, a method for estimating the standard errors of the maximum likelihood estimators is shown to be easily employable, however large the dimension. A useful transformation for plotting the mixture data is illustrated.

A centralt-distribution approximation to the noncentraltdistribution is suggested which is quite accurate even for moderate values of degrees of freedom, and is a more accurate approximation than is the normal approximation for small values of the noncentrality parameter δ.

This paper is concerned with a problem of comparing two compound distributions each with componentsf1(x) andf2(x), and with mixing proportionspxand (1 –px) for the first, andpyand (I –py) for the second distribution, respectively. Four methods are proposed for testing the hypothesisHo:px=py. The first two tests are based on the asymptotic normality of two unbiased estimators forpy–px, and the other two are nonparametric tests. The asymptotic power functions for the tests are given and a simulation technique is used to compare the efficiencies of the four tests applied for mixed normal and for mixed exponential distributions.

A recursive method is described, which may be used to obtain certain distributional results relating to order statistics. The procedure is applied to gamma samples to obtain null distributions of various statistics appropriate for the testing of single and multiple outliers, and some useful inequalities for tail probabilities.
