摘要:
This paper deals with problems of response surface optimization in which the control variables and responses are subject to costs and constraints. Relationships between control variables and the cost or constraint functions are treated as additional response surfaces if explicit algebraic models are unavailable. Optimization methods are suggested which are based on gradient search and nonlinear programming techniques. To assure operating conditions within the specified constraint set a method based on feasible directions is used to control the search pattern. A scale-invariant gradient search method is suggested. Because it leads to an economical path to the maximum point the method has been dubbed “cheapest ascent.” The selection of measurement scales for the control variables is also discussed.

摘要:
We give best tests and corresponding power functions for testing the hypothesis of no drift versus the alternative of positive linear drift in a one-dimensional Brownian motion process. The tests are based on a simple random sample from a first passage time distribution associated with the Brownian motion process. In reliability applications the first passage times would be the lifetimes of objects which fail when some noisy physical parameter reaches a critical value. In this case the life distribution is determined by the assumption that the physical parameter behaves like a Brownian motion and then the problem is equivalent to testing the hypothesis of infinite mean life versus the alternative of finite mean life. These tests are also applicable (and remain best) in the case of a single realization of Brownian motion for which only certain crossing time data is available.

摘要:
In many regression problems, data on the dependent variable are censored; that is, the values of some observations are known only to be above or else below some value. Such data often arise in accelerated life testing where life is the dependent variable and temperature or stress is the independent variable, and some test units have not failed at the time of the analysis. In such situations, the standard techniques of least squares estimation for the parameters of a linear regression model cannot be used, since the values of the censored observations are not known.

摘要:
This paper considers the development of a cost based industrial quality control system which functions both as an acceptance sampling plan and as a means for determining an assignable cause of quality variation in the manufacturing process. The manufacturing faci1ity studied normally produces items at a relatively constant proportion defective. The facility is subject, however, to random failures in time which cause the proportion defective to shift upwards. The objective of the paper is to develop a sampling plan which minimizes the expected total annual cost of quality control by determining t)he sample size, acceptance number, and time period between successive samples. The optimization technique employed is a combination of a multivariate search technique and a partial enumeration.

摘要:
The problem of devising systematic policies for replacement of equipment subject to wear-out involves the detection of increases in failure rates. Detection procedures are defined as stopping timesNwith respect to the observed sequence of random failures. The concepts of “quickness of detection” and “frequency of false reactions” are made precise and a class of procedures is studied which optimizes the former asymptotically as the latter is reduced to zero. Results of Monte Carlo experiments are given which show that efficient quickness of detection is attainable simultaneously for various levels of increase in failure rates.

摘要:
The power function of a test proposed by Kumar and Pate1 (1971) for testing the equality of the location parameters of two exponential distributions with equal but unknown scale parameters is given. The test of Kumar and Pate1 is compared with a test equivalent to the likelihood ratio test. Some critical values and power values are given for a one-tailed test.

摘要:
In this paper power functions are derived for the likelihood ratio test and the Kumar-Pate1 test which are based on right-censored samples for testing the equality of location parameters of two exponential distributions when their common scale parameter is unknown. It is further indicated that the power of the likelihood ratio test is monotonic and is completely unbiased. On the other hand, the Kumar-Patel test is biased near the origin except for equal sample sizes.

摘要:
In this note it is shown how the methodology of the Zeigler and Tietjen double sample test for testing a hypothesis about the variance of a normal distribution can be used to construct double sample tests for testing hypotheses about the mean of an exponential distribution.

摘要:
The problem considered here is that of estimating the number of failures to observe in Exponential life-testing procedures to control the risks of erroneous judgments on the true mean-time-to-fail (MTTF), and hence on the true reliability, for the single parameter Exponential distribution.
