C. Mallows proposed a statistic,Cp, for variable selection in multiple regression. Gorman and Toman (1966) published the statistic, its derivation, and several examples of its use. The purpose of this note is to show that there is a one-to-one correspondence betweenCpand the older, well established criterion known as adjustedR2, e.g. Ezekiel (1930).

The test devised by Tukey, 1959, to Duckworth's specifications was intended to test for the difference in location of two populations by counting the number of the sample from one population exceeding the highest observation of the sample from the second population together with the number from the second sample which are lower than the lowest observation in the first sample. In much experimental work only the high or low end (but not both) of the scale can be effectively quantified or even observed. This note gives a simple modification of the test for this case.

The problem of estimating the reliability characteristics of parallel systems with spares and/or repairable elements is investigated. A parallel system is such that the failure of all units causes failure of the entire system. Under very general assumptions, we have found, among others, an upper as well as a lower bound on the mean time before failure of a parallel system withnindependent units. An example is given in detail to illustrate how the theorems proved in section 2 can be applied and the main theorem is stated in section 4. Some bounds on the higher moments of the time to failure are treated in [l].

In this paper ak-sample non-parametric test for trend is considered. Given a sample of sizeni,i= 1, …,krespectively from each ofkpopulations, the test rejects the hypothesis that thekpopulations are identical ifS= Σki=2Si≥Si. Here Si is the Mann-Whitney statistic computed when each observation in thei-th sample is compared with the combined observations from the first (i– 1) populations. A recurrence formula is derived for computing the exact distribution of S. Tables of exact probabilities and critical values are given for nominal values of α = 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.01, and 0.005 fork= 3 and all possible sample sizes from 2 to 8, and for equal sample sizes for values ofn= 2(1)6,k= 4(1)6.
