Conditions for which the density function of a mixture of two normal distributions is bimodal are investigated. For fixed values of the variances σ12and σ22of the normal distributions if the difference between the means is sufficiently small, the distribution of the mixture will be unimodal, independent of the proportionspand 1 –p, 0 <p< 1. If the difference exceeds a critical value which depends on σ12and σ22the bimodality property then depends onp. Values ofpsufficiently close to zero and one always exist for which the distribution is unimodal.

3(2n–2) designs may bedivided into two blocks, one of size 2n–1and the other of size 2n–2by blocking on one of the defining contrasts and into three blocks of size 2n–2by blocking on all three defining contrasts. Blocking on an effect which is not a defining contrast gives two blocks of 3(2n–3) runs each. In this paper these methods are applied to 3(2n–k) designs with twelve or twenty-four points. The designs considered are the 3(24–2) and 3(25–2) designs with all main effects and all two factor interactions estimable (assuming that higher order interactions are negligible), and saturated main effect plans with twelve points and up to eleven factors.

Both tolerance limits and sampling plans are discussed where percentagesp/2 in each of the tails of the normal distribution are to be controlled. Tables of constants are given which have been accurately computed using the new techniques developed in the paper. These results are set up from the consumer's viewpoint, but can easily be extended to the producer's viewpoint. Programs on the CDC-1604 computer are available to extend the tables for any special applications not already covered.

The array of numbers which represent the treatment combinations of factorial arrangements are utilized to construct balanced incomplete block designs and partially balanced incomplete block designs with two associate classes. A systematic procedure of selecting portions of these arrays is presented. These partial arrays lead to the construction of various incomplete block designs when the columns of the array denote the blocks (treatments), the rows of the array denote the treatments (blocks), and the presence of a specific number in a particular column (row) denotes the presence of a treatment in the block which that column (row) represents.

This paper deals with large sample estimation of the location parameter (α1and the scale parameter α2in the gamma distribution with known shape parameter. Best linear unbiased estimates based onksample quantiles are used. For a givenk, the optimum spacings of the sample quantiles can be replaced by simpler “nearly optimum” spacings at virtually no loss of asymptotic efficiency. The theory behind the nearly optimum spacings is briefly reviewed. The major part of the paper concerns estimation of α2when α2is known. Nearly optimum spacings together with the coefficients to be used in computing the estimates are presented in a number of tables fork= 1(1) 10, and various values of the shape parameter. The paper also contains brief discussions of estimation of α1, when α2is known, and simultaneous estimation of α1and α2.

An estimate, with limits of uncertainty, is given for the shape parameter of the Weibull distribution when failure experience results from lots having different quality levels. The data result from the following situation. Lots are removed from service at some target value, normally after experiencing no failures. Some lots experience one failure, and the remaining non-failed items remain in service until the target value is reached. Finally, there are a few lots in which two failures occur. In this instance, all remaining non-failed items are removed immediately after the second failure occurs. It is assumed that all lots have the same shape parameter, with lot differences, when they exist, appearing as differences in the scale parameter value.

In continuation of the authors' tables of significance tests (1963), the power function of this exact test for the 2 × 3 contingency table using the Freeman & Halton principle is derived and evaluated numerically in the form of contours of constant power for the cases:A= 5(5) 15, whereAis the total number in each of the three groups observed according to the numbers of ‘Successes’ (= ai) in each. Comparisons are also made with the exact significance points of the competingX2and (−2 log λ) tests under the null hypothesisH0and also alternatives toH0.
