摘要:
The basic sciences all require an ability to measure the amounts of substances under study. With new methods of measurement constantly being proposed there is a need for techniques for comparing these methods in terms of their precision and accuracy. Of particular interest is the case in which none of the individual methods are known to measure “truth”. A multiple methods comparison technique for this case is proposed in this paper, and is illustrated by an example from the field of clinical chemistry. Estimates of the components of variance for each method are developed, and some of their properties explored.

This is a discussion about a very well-written paper by Schmee and Hahn which addresses the problem of analyzing censored data. The paper proposes a method called iterated least squares (ILS) and compares ILS to existing methods that are somewhat more cumbersome to carry out. This discussion emphasizes possible use of the paper as a model for such articles, and cites some examples to support the authors' statement that problems involving censored data occur often in practice.

摘要:
A new approach is proposed for testing goodness of fit for censored samples. A transformation is applied so that the transformed censored sample behaves under the null hypothesis like a complete sample from the uniform (0,1) distribution. Any standard goodness-of-fit test can then be applied using existing tables. Empirical comparisons indicate that the proposed technique provides better overall power than other existing methods.

The jackknife method is applied to the problem of confidence interval estimation of the long run availability of an individual component or system, and of redundant systems of several components. The problem of variable selection in multivariate regression is considered. Procedures for isolating subsets of the independent variables which adequately describe the regression relationship between the set of dependent variables and the set of all independent variables are discussed. Each procedure leads to a set of subsets of variables which contains all adequate subsets with probability not less than a specified lower bound. A graphical aid to the assessment of the relative importance of subsets of independent variables is noted.

Large sample properties of statistics used in latent root regression analysis are investigated by examining the matrix of correlations among the predictor and response variables as the sample size becomes infinite. The latent roots and latent vectors of the asymptotic correlation matrix are derived for specific model configurations of interest. From the study of the asymptotic latent roots and latent vectors, a new statistic is proposed for use in detecting nonpredictive multicollinearities.
