Abstract:The effects of L‐5HTP 200 mg on the EEG sleep pattern were investigated in normal subjects. When L‐5HTP 200 mg was orally administered, only %S1 significantly decreased in comparison with the baseline. There was no change in any sleep stage on the first recovery night. On the second recovery night, %S1 significantly decreased, while %SR increased significantly. SWS did not show any change. The effects of L‐5HTP 200 mg were investigated on the first recovery night after one night of sleep deprivation. SWS significantly increased on the first recovery night when a placebo was given, while this rebound increase of SWS disappeared and %S2 significantly increased on the first recovery night when L‐5HTP was given. %SR significantly increased on the next night after the L‐5

Abstract:The sleep pattern of 13 alcoholics was recorded for five consecutive nights after the cessation of alcohol intake. In six of the 13 patients, delirium tremens occurred after hospitalization. A decrease of total sleep time and slow wave sleep was more pronounced in the patients with delirium tremens than in those without. REM sleep had slightly decreased in both groups. Rebound increase in REM sleep had not been observed in all the patients with delirium tremens. Abstract:Forty‐three cases of absence seizure were studied from the viewpoint of prognosis. Thirty‐three had been seizure‐free for at least one year until the time of follow‐up. The remaining 10 cases were uncontrollable and their plasma levels of the drugs were measured. The following characteristics were more significantly found in the uncontrollable group: (1) late onset (14 years old or later) (2) preceding grand mal seizures (3) accompanying automatisms. The above three factors were found to be interrelated. Abstract:When epileptic seizures occur suddenly in puberty, the patient is seized with the feeling of anxiety, isolation and despair, and this feeling is increased by the special quality of puberty. The patient tries to overcome this critical situation by including “epilepsy” in his own personality. When this process is accomplished in puberty in which an ego‐identification is done, an epileptic personality disorder is formed gradually. Accordingly, how the patient tides over this crisis is important for the formation of an epileptic personality disorder. In order to prevent the development of this condition, it is necessary to apply psychotherapy.An dem Beobachtungen von 2 Fällen wurde das Problem der Beteiligung der Pubertät an der Bildung der epileptischen Wesensänderung erörtert. Diese gravierende Sachlage der Epilepsie treibt den Kranken in Isolierung und Einsamkeit. Aber die Identifizierung des Ichs bei einem in der Pubertät erkrankten Patienten scheitert leicht, damit wird sein Isolierungs‐ und Einsamkeitsgefühl noch mehr vertieft. Um diese Krisensituation des Kranken zu überwinden, versucht er, sich an der Wirklichkeit festzuklammern und vergeblich seine Existenzstellung in der realen Welt dadurch sicherzustellen, daβ er seine epileptische Erkrankung in sich aufnimmt. Wenn diese Verhältnisse lange andauern, dann festigen sie sich und es kommt zur epileptischen Wesensänderung. Abstract:Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is an x‐linked hereditary neurological disorder characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol ester with long chain fatty acids in the brain and adrenal gland. We examined cholesterol ester metabolism for the postmortem brain tissues of ALD patients, using cholesterol ester with short and long chain fatty acids as the substrate for hydrlyzing enzyme, as well as short and long chain fatty acids for synthesizing enzyme.No enzyme abnormality was found. However, there was a discrepancy between hydrolytic and synthetic activities with short or long chain fatty acids. The findings suggest that the accumulation of cholesterol ester with long chain fatty acids in ALD brain is not due to enzyme abnormalities, but is a secondary phenomenon which comes from abnormal fatty acid metabolism causing a high concentration of long chain fatty acid

Abstract:In a retrospective study involving 277 autopsy cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which had been published in the Annual of the Pathological Autopsy Cases in Japan, an investigation was made of concurrent visceral lesions. The results indicated that complications involving the digestive organs, urinary tract and supportive connective tissues were less frequent in ALS than in patients with degenerative diseases of the central nervous system who served as controls. Since a similar discrepancy was observed between patients with ALS and with encephalitis, it was postulated that the difference in incidences might not be simply explained by differences in patients' ages and the duration of illness.

Abstract:In the crab‐eating monkey (Macaca irus), the subcortical projection from the retina was studied by means of the autoradiographic method. Retinofugal fibers terminated bilaterally in the suprachiasmatic, pregeniculate, lateral geniculate, olivary, pretectal, lateral terminal and dorsal terminal nuclei and the superior colliculi. In the ipsilateral lateral geniculate nucleus, the retinofugal fibers terminated on laminae 0, 2, 3, and 5; in the contralateral nucleus, they ended in laminae 1, 4, and 6. Abstract:In conducting the double‐blind controlled study of antidepressants, observations were carried out on the relationship between Maprotiline/Desmethylmaprotiline, concentrations in blood and antidepressive effects, the doses and the incidence of side effects.1) The maprotiline concentration in the effective group (markedly improved + moderately improved) was 306.9 ± 112.9 ng/ml, and 244.4 ± 43.0 ng/ml in the non‐effective group (slightly improved + unchanged + aggavated). There was no statistically significant difference between both groups.2) Correlations of the maprotiline concentration in blood and together with desmethylmaprotiline to the efficacy (the variation rates in Hamilton's scores) showed a tendency toward higher concentrations in blood with higher therapeutic responses.3) Side effects were observed in all of the patients with the concentration in blood higher than the mean value (2
