Abstract:During a four‐week open study, amoxapine (AX), a new antidepressant agent, was administered to seven patients with pseudoneurotic schizophrenia, seven with neurosis and another seven with schizophrenia, all having similar symptoms. The improvement ratio was 71.4% in the pseudo‐neurotic schizophrenia group, 57.1% in the neurosis group and 42.8% in the schizophrenia group. Through the application of rating instruments, improvements were observed in the pseudoneurotic schizophrenia group in such items as psychotic and psychoneurotic symptoms in the assessment through the Springfield Outpatient Symptom and Adjustment Index, somatic concern and blunted affect through the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and depression and depersonalization through the Clinical Rating Scale. On the other hand, overall improvements were less seen in the items of the neurosis group and the schizophrenia group. Effective doses of AX were 30 to 75 mg/day in the three groups. Side effects were observed in four cases which included insomnia, tachycardia, palpitation and hypomanic state. There were no cases in which AX was discontinued because of the side effects as these symptoms were slight. Abstract:Middle latency components in response to stimulation of both ears with 50 dB SL clicks at a rate of 10/sec were recorded in young healthy subjects from the left mastoid‐nose tip and right mastoid‐nose tip. All were right‐handed. 1) Lateral differences were found in most subjects. As to the largest peak‐to‐peak amplitude, the amplitude on the right side was larger than that on the left in 18 subjects, but the reverse was found in 11. Abstract:A case report of psychomotor status was presented. A 51‐year‐old male caught a cold and had a high fever at the end of September, 1979. On October 7th, he had a visual hallucination followed by a generalized seizure. After hospitalization he went through several fits of automatism. On October 15th, he was seized with automatism status in which the seizures were repeated every 25 minutes and there was no recovery of consciousness between the seizures. Although an intravenous injection of diazepam interrupted this status, on October 17th he showed subclinical seizure status on the EEG during which automatism traces were rarely found. By the medication of carbamazepine and clonazepam, he improved gradually. CT‐scan revealed the disappearance of the right sylvian fissure and CSF showed findings of viral encephalitis. Consequently, he was considered to have been suffering from temporal lobe encephalitis and shown an episode of psychomotor status with automatisms and automatism traces during which typical automatism status was observed as

Abstract:Twenty‐two cases with the diffuse slow spike‐wave, whose onset of clinical symptoms was at the age of seven or later, were examined. Half of them presented symptoms pertinent to the Lennox‐Gastaut syndrome. The other half were cases of absence, psychomotor seizure or grand mal. The former group was distinguished from the latter in that it had worse prognoses concerning the seizure and intelligence, and discussions were held to see if it corresponds to the “Lennox‐Gastaut syndrome of late onset” (Lipinski). Abstract:With 200 SEPs of normal subjects, the differences in the Group Mean SEP between sexes were defined eliminating the differences attributable to another peripheral factor relating to the nutritional condition represented by the Rohrer's index. The differences in the baseline amplitude of the Group Mean SEP between males vs. females in the sections between roughly 23–111 msec, around 330 msec, and behind 389 msec in latency were verified, subtracting the differences between the groups with a high vs. low value of the Rohrer's index, not attributable to the different nutritional condition, and might be the central origin. Abstract:The effect of motor‐response recovery after a nonresponse condition on the CNV was investigated in relation to the MPI in 53 healthy adults. The control CNV area before the nonresponse condition had an inverted‐U relation to the extraversion score. At the recovery condition the inverted‐U relation between the CNV area and the extraversion score shifted toward the lower extraversion score in those subjects who showed a shortened reaction time: i.e., the introverts, particularly the dysthymiacs, responded with the larger CNV area at the recovery condition than at the control condition. Abstract:In this study we investigated the effect of the electroconvulsive shock (ECS) soon after each amygdaloid stimulation (KS) upon the development of a kindling phenomenon. Thirty male Wistar albino rats were used in this study. Once daily stimulation of 200 μA, 1 msec, 60 Hz, 2 sec train by the right amygdaloid stimulation electrodes and the recording of the EEG were done. Rats of the Kindling + ECS group received the ECS through the clipped ears for five minutes after the KS. Behavioral manifestations, the duration of afterdischarge and the numbers of spikes were counted for five minutes at the time of every stimulation. The numbers of times the KS required to develop each stage were stage 1:4.8, stage 2:8, stage 3:8.6, stage 4:9.6, stage 5:12.6, respectively, on the kindling group. On the ECS‐treated group, those were stage 1:8, stage 2:17, stage 3:18, stage 4: more than 20. The ECS soon after the amygdaloid stimulation retarded the process of kindling significantly. Abstract:To assess the reliability of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate levels in children for differentiating between bacterial and viral meningitis, we measured the CSF lactate levels using the carboxylic acid analyzer, enzymatic method and colorimetric determination. Lactate determination by these methods is a highly reliable indicator of the presence or absence of bacterial meningitis. Moreover, the duration of elevated CSF lactate levels coincided with the clinical response to therapy.

Abstract:An autopsy case of subacute encephalopathy with disseminated necrosis was reported. The patient, a 34‐year‐old male, complained of headache and generalized convulsion. He also showed constructional apraxia and dementia. These symptoms progressed slowly. Neurological examinations revealed no abnormalities except for a slight optic nerve atrophy. Laboratory examinations disclosed a high ratio of the titer of antibody of rubella virus. Based on the findings mentioned above, he was diagnosed as atypical subacute encephalopathy, and because of his usage of thinner for 10 years, intoxication by it was also suspected. An autopsy of the brain revealed disseminated small necrosis in the gray matter over the whole brain.
