Abstract:The relation among age at onset of schizophrenia, sex and the presence or absence of first‐degree relatives with schizophrenia was investigated in 2,417 inpatients meeting the DSM‐111 criteria for schizophrenia. Abstract:Three cases of schizophrenia with ideographic neologisms in Japanese are presented and compared with aphasic neologisms reported in Japanese literature. Schizophrenic neologisms are different from aphasic neologisms in nature. The contrast becomes obvious when both are compared in Japanese writing based on the dual writing system of kanji (Chinese characters, ideogram) and kana (phonetic characters, syllabogram).

Abstract:Coenzyme Q10in the plasma and erythrocytes were determined in ambulant schizophrenic patients. As a result, the erythrocyte level of coenzyme Q., in these patients was significantly low compared with most of the control group.

Abstract:The visuo‐motor reaction times of normal subjects and schizophrenics were measured to investigate adaptation of eye‐hand coordination in schizophrenics under modified vision. Reaction time was measured in 32 normal subjects and 32 schizophrenics by using a rectangular board with 24 illuminated buttons. Subjects' task was to press an illuminated button as quickly as possible under normal and modified vision. Time elapsed from when the light was switched on to when the button was pressed was measured as the visuo‐motor reaction time in msec. Three conditions were set up: control in normal vision; inverted using an inverting goggle; reversed using a reversing goggle. In general the visuo‐motor reaction times of schizophrenics were slower than those of nonnal subjects. But in the reversed condition, there was no significant difference between normal subjects and schizophrenics. The visuo‐motor reaction times of schizophrenics in the reversed Condition showed a large dispersion with the fastest being faster than that of any normal subjects. Abstract:We observed a case of withdrawal after abrupt discontinuation of mianserin. A 41‐year‐old woman was treated according to a diagnosis of depression, which was her 6th episode. Mianserin 30 mg/day, etizolam 1 mg/day and flunitrazepam 1 mg/day were administered. When the patient discontinued taking the drugs by herself because of subsiding of these symptoms, severe panic anxiety appeared. This panic anxiety was not relieved by taking etizolam and flunitrazepam again, but subsided rapidly by the re‐administration of mianserin 30 mg/day, and because of that the depressive symptom also disappeared.From these experiences panic anxiety seemed to be a withdrawal symptom, and involvement of the noradrenergic system in panic anxiety as well as serotonergic system was sugg

Abstract:Water intoxication occurs almost exclusively in many patients with chronic psychiatric disorder. To elucidate the mechanism of this syndrome, we undertook the following animal experiments and clinical study.Twelve rabbits were given neuroleptics for eight weeks. From measurement of arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion response to osmotic stimuli (fluid deprivation, partaking ad lib. and water loading), we found that chronic neuroleptic administration might raise the sensitivity of AVP escretion response.Then we investigated the manners of AVP secretion during ad lib. drinking in seventeen schizophrenic patients with hyponatremia and sixteen schizophrenic patients without hyponatremia. Normal range of plasma AVP was obtained from healthy volunteers by water loading. Only in both schizophrenic groups was plasma AVP detected below 270 mosm/kg osmolality. We observed that sensitivity of AVP secretion response to osmolality was decreased in schizophrenic patients, regardless of the presence of hyponatremia.We hypothesize that the primary low sensitivity of AVP secretion response to osmo‐receptor and the secondary renal hypersensitivity of AVP receptor may play the major role in the occurrence of water intoxication, Linked to SIADH, in schizophrenic patient

Abstract:The plasma and platebet PEA levels of 20 normal subjects and 17 schizophrenic patients were investigated using a high‐performance liquid chromatography. In the normals the mean plasma and platelet levels of PEA were 4.9 ± 1.9 ng/ml and 1.78 ± 1.01 ng/mg protein, respctively, while in the schizophrenics, those were 12.1 ± 7.9 ng/ml and 0.77 ± 0.5 ng/mg protein, respectively. Abstract:We discussed the electroclinical correlation of complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE) followed up by simultaneous VTR‐EEG monitoring. An eight‐year‐old boy had repetitive seizures lasting for 30 to 90 minutes in addition to ordinary seizures with typical oral automatism of a few minutes duration. This case fulfilled the criteria for diagnosis of CPSE by Treimanel al. (1983), and was classified as the discontinuous type of CPSE described by Gastautet al. (1975). The clinical symptoms were characterized by a repeated occurrence of psychomotor arrest and automatic phases. The EEG showed an alternate appearance of two phases. Abstract:A modified correlation method was applied to AEPs under a choice reaction task to distinguish hemispheric influences on motor versus stimulus processing. The subjects were 16 right‐handed males (age: 19–30). The task was to press the micro‐switch with the right index finger as quickly as possible to 2,000 Hz tone pips (GO) but not to press to 1,500 Hz (NO GO). Active electrodes were placed bilaterally on C3 and C4, according to the 10–20 system and linked‐ear electrodes were used as a reference. EEGs triggered by the auditory stimuli were summated 100 times and the obtained AEPs were mainly analyzed by a modified correlation method. The results were as follows; 1. the mlean choice reaction time was 332 ± 83 msec, 2. examined by a modified correlation method, there were significant differences between GO and NO GO at the latencies of 200–300 msec.
