ABSTRACT:We have studied the influence of mouse testis cells on unstimulated lymphoproliferation; on allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction; and on concanavalin A‐stimulated, phytohemagglutinin‐stimulated, or lipopolysaccaride‐stimulated responses in vitro. Co—culture with highly enriched irradiated (2000 R) Leydig cells (LC) led in each case to a considerable reduction of3H TdR uptake. Prolonged tissue graft survival times suggest that the testis is an immunologically privileged site. This may be explained by an immune—suppressive function of LC in vivo. LC are also capable of selectively binding lymphoid and myeloid cells to their surface. This capacity, accompanied by a suppression of immune reactivity in situ, may play a role in cases of testicular relapse observed in acute

ABSTRACT:By immunoaffinity chromatography using anti‐IgG, anti‐IgM, and anti‐IgA coupled to CNBr‐activated sepharose 4B, the immunoglobulin class of sperm‐agglutinating antibodies was investigated in cervical mucus from four infertile women. In all patients, it was found that the sperm antibodies in cervical mucus belonged to the IgA class, whereas in serum, which was studied in two of the patients, IgG sperm antibodies were demonstrated. Absorption of the four cervical mucus samples with anti‐secretory component sepharose 4B revealed that the IgA antibodies in at least two of the samples were SC‐IgA antibodies. Investigation of a third sample by sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation revealed that the IgA sperm antibodies were characterized by a sedimentation coefficient between 9S and 13S, strongly suggesting the presence of SC‐IgA antibodies. ABSTRACT:A number of mouse strains of known F9 resistance phenotype have been tested for their in vitro natural killer activity against both F9 and YAC target cells. The pattern of in vitro natural killer activity observed does not correlate with the pattern of in vivo F9 resistance. The relative efficiencies of in vitro lysis of the F9 and YAC targets by endogenous natural killer effectors from the 129/Sv, SJL/J, C57B1/ 6J, and BALB/cJ strains do, however, parallel each other, even though overall levels of F9 target lysis are very low. Since cold competition experiments indicate that the embryonal carcinoma cell lines tested, F9, PCC4/Aza, and PCC3/A/1, can compete efficiently with YAC as target, this low lysis of embryonal carcinoma cells may be due to an intrinsic lysis resistance. The finding that the parietal endoderm cell line PYS‐2 and the trophoectodermal cell line TDM 1 also compete with YAC targets in cold competition experiments is discussed in relation to previous reports suggesting that such differentiated derivatives lack natural killer target structure

ABSTRACT:The plasma concentrations of the complement components C3 and C4, as well as the split products C3c and C3d, were measured before, during, and after normal pregnancy. Significantly increased values were observed in the C3 and C3d levels in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The level of C4 was not significantly affected by pregnancy and C3c could not be detected using electroimmunoassays. ABSTRACT:A comparative study of alpha‐naphthyl (nonspecific) esterase (ANAE), acid phosphatase (AcP), and beta‐glucuronidase (β‐GLUS) in the blood lymphocytes was carried out on 26 healthy pregnant women (7 to 27 weeks' amenorrhea) and on 32 normal nonpregnant women, all 58 of whom were 19 to 34 years old. In pregnant women, we found a significantly lower percentage of ANAE‐positive lymphocytes (after 11 weeks' amenorrhea), a strong reduction in AcP, and a slight decrease in β‐GLUS.
