ABSTRACT:The antigenic spectra of estrual or cystic follicular fluid (FF) consisted of 11 blood serum antigens while that of estrual or cystic ovary consisted of 9 identical antigens of which 2 were ovarian specific. The two ovarian‐specific antigens were detected with antisera to estrual or cystic ovary but not with antisera to nonestrual ovaries. They were in higher concentration in estrual ovary than cystic ovary, were localized in bovine oocyte zona pellucida by immunofluorescence and light scattering, and cross‐reacted with prostate tissue. Cystic FF contained a higher concentration (P<0.05) of IgG than at any stage of the cycle except estrus, and a lower concentration (P<0.05) of estradiol‐17β than at estrus. It was hypothesized that increased levels of estradiol during estrus alter the permeability of the follicle wall unmasking a zona pellucida antigen in the preovulatory follicle. ABSTRACT:Previous authors reported high incidences of complement dependent sperm immobilizing antibodies in cervical mucus (CM) and found a correlation with poor postcoital tests. In all those investigations the CM samples were tested after dilution with a salt solution. In the present study we investigated 50 CM samples from infertile couples who had during the routine fertility investigation poor postcoital tests. All CM samples were tested after dilution with an equal volume of normal human serum; only one sample was found positive. On the other hand, if the CM samples were diluted with an equal volume of a buffered salt solution, many positive results were obtained. With some guinea pig serum batches, however, all tests with buffer‐diluted CM samples were negative, despite good reaction of the positive control serum. We concluded that the positive results with buffer‐diluted CM samples were due to a factor in the animal serum used as complement preparation and that complement‐dependent sperm immobilizing antibodies in CM are an unlikely cause of a poor postcoital

ABSTRACT:A simple procedure for detection of antisperm antibodies of IgA class in human cervical mucus is described and the results of its application to samples from 102 patients are presented. The results suggest that the IgA immunobead test (IgA‐IBT) is a specific and clinically useful test for sperm antibodies. There was a strong correlation between the IgA‐IBT and the presence of complement‐dependent sperm immobilization in serum (Spearman's, r = 0.92, p<0.001). Positive IgA‐IBT results occurred only in mucus samples that showed poor penetration by normal sperm. ABSTRACT:Effects of immunization of pregnant AKR mice with nucleated chicken erythrocytes (CRBC) on immune responses of their offspring were examined. Antigen‐specific reduction of generation of cytotoxicity and plaque forming cells (PFC) was demonstrated in the offspring at 8 weeks after birth, and lasted for 15 weeks. Cross‐fostering experiments and cell transfer experiments showed that such suppression would be induced by antibody contained in the milk of immunized mothers rather than suppressor cells. ABSTRACT:Immune studies were performed in eight pregnancies occurring after renal transplantation (tx). In three cases a regular, long‐term immune monitoring before, during, and after the pregnancy was possible. The results showed 1) no changes concerning OKT 3, 4, 8, and SMIg‐defined T‐ and B‐lymphocyte subsets in the mothers: 2) a higher level of spontaneous E‐ and normal E‐rosette‐defined T‐subsets in the mothers rejecting their allografts; 3) a stronger response to mitogen and antigen stimulation and a stronger mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC) response towards the infants also in those rejecting their grafts; 4) the offspring of the transplanted mothers showed a weaker immune responder state compared with the offspring of six age‐match

ABSTRACT:The immunological survival of the antigen‐bearing mammalian feto‐placental unit is determined by the functional properties of the tissues at the feto‐maternal interface. Antigen‐specific systemic suppressor mechanisms such as suppressor T cells and non‐antigen‐specific suppressive serum factors appear not to play a major role in protection of the fetus. A novel type of non‐MHC specific suppressor cell accumulates locally in the decidua of successfully allopregnant mice. This decidua‐associated suppressor is a small lymphocytic cell possessing cytoplasmic granules, lacks T cell markers, and is deficient in number and activity at the implantation sites of viable xenogeneic Mus caroli embryos gestating in the uterus of Mus musculus animals at the time that maternal lymphoid cells begin to infiltrate the xenoembryos. These Mus caroli embryos subsequently resorb.
