ABSTRACT:Evidence is presented for cross‐reactivity between antigens on human sperm and T lymphocytes. In 25 infertile couples in which both the males and females had significant antisperm immunity, antibody (Ab) titers to thymocytes (mean ± S.E.M. 159 ±4 and 72 ± 14, respectively, in males and females), T cell lines CCRF‐CEM (69±5 and 48±8) and HSB‐2 (56±15) and 41±8), suppressorenriched (TG) cells (26±6 and 66±28) and helper‐enriched (Tg—) cells (26±4 and 46±14) were significantly elevated, as compared wth Ab titers in 45 normal males and 45 normal females without antisperm immunity. Antibody titers to adult B cells, B cell line RAJI, and granulocytes were similar in the two groups. Antisperm Ab titers in sera, sperm extracts, and seminal plasma of the infertile subjects were significantly reduced after absorption with sperm, thymocytes, or T cell line CCRF‐CEM but not with the B cell line RAJI. Antithymocyte Ab titers in the sera were significantly reduced (p<0.001) after absorption with thymocytes, CCRF‐CEM, or sperm, but not RAJI. Lymphocytes from the infertile patients, when stimulated with pokeweed mitogen in vitro, produced antisperm and anti‐T‐lymphocyte antibodies at significantly higher

ABSTRACT:Fourteen‐day fetal thymus was grown in organ culture under conditions reportedly optimizing epidermal/epithelial cell growth. While the fibroblastoid component is stimulated by epidermal growth factor and fibroblastoid growth factor, embryonic thymic epithelial cells do not grow significantly under any conditions, although they persist in organ explants. The major cell types cultured are fibroblastoid and macrophage. In organ explant cultures, epithelial cells appear to be oriented by the presence of a cell coat demonstrated by electron microscopy. This coat is absent from certain ciliated cells consistently found in deeper regions of the explant. Using amniotic fluid as a growth factor, almost pure cultures of thymic macrophages can be obtaine

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Studies on the change of peripheral T and B lymphocytes and T cells bearing Fc receptors for IgG (Ig‐G•FcR+•T lymphocytes) and IgM (IgM•FcR+•T lymphocytes) in normal pregnant women and patients with threatened abortion were performed by using rosette‐formation tests. There was no significant difference in the proportion of T and B lymphocytes between pregnant and nonpregnant women.The percentage change of T cells of the patients in threatened abortion with good prognosis was significantly decreased and that of B cells of the patients in threatened abortion was significantly increased compared with that of normal pregnant women.The percentage of IgG•FcR+•T lymphocytes in the T lymphocytes increased in the various stages of pregnant and postpartum women as compared with that in nonpregnant women, and in the case of the patients with threatened abortion it also increased significantly from that of normal pregnant women. ABSTRACT:Eleven groups, each of ten Sprague‐Dawley female rats, were sacrificed at 12 to 13 weeks of age; one group of virgins, the others at two‐day intervals during the first ten days after either inbred or outbred mating. Observations were made on thymus weight, total white cell count, and thymic white cell density.Compared with the virgin group no significant differences were observed in the thymic weight at any stage after either inbred or outbred mating. In contrast the total white cell counts were significantly greater than the virgin count on the second postcoital day after both inbred and outbred mating.These increased total counts were maintained until the end of the observation period and were associated with significant increases in the thymic white cell densities.
