Student evaluation of instruction and instructor performance in higher education are being accorded an increasingly prominent role in decisions concerned with faculty promotion and tenure, as well as with advisement on teaching strategies. In this context a number of factor analyses have been imposed upon student rating‐instruments in order to facilitate meaningful interpretation of student judgments. The present paper reports the resul ts of a factor analysis of the rating scales used by graduate students enrolled in counselor education programs at Western Michigan University to evaluate perceived quality of instruction. A principal components factor analysis yielded three interpretable factors that were labeled Responsiveness‐Rapport, Evaluation Process, and Instructional Merit. The retention of verbal helping skills by human service worker trainees who had completed the Danish and Hauer (1973) training program seven months earlier was explored. Twenty‐six trainees engaged in three helping interviews'before training, immediately following training, and seven months later. Consistent with other follow‐up studies, high skill levels at posttraining were generally not maintained at follow‐up. Two techniques of videotape recorded modeling for training counselors to ask open‐ended questions (OEQ) were examined. It was hypothesized that apurevideo model, exhibiting only desired behavior, would result in greater learning than acorrectivevideo model, exhibiting both desired and undesired behavior, given that both models contained cues to indicate whether the behaviors are desired or undesired. Eighteen undergraduate peer counselors were randomly assigned to either (a) pure video model, (b) corrective video model, or (c) no‐treatment control.Pre and postmeasures of level of OEQ responses were obtained by simulated interviews with one of four research assistants trained as pseudo‐clients. Results indicate: (a) treatment had a significant effect on percentage of OEQ (F(2, 15) = 3.75, p<.05); (b) only the pure model was significantly different from the no‐treatment control (Dunnett'st(3, 15) = 2.58,p<.02); and (c) the pure model was not significantly different from the corrective model. The findings support, but do not confirm, the hypothesis of the study that a pure video model would result in greater learning than a corrective video model. Counselor education programs must respond to the need for inservice education for practicing, school counselors. The Extern Program described here is designed to provide inservice education through didactic, experiential learning activities implemented on a one weekend per month schedule for nine months. The weekend training involves new developments in the field of counseling, problem solving with a focus on concerns brought to the sessions by the counselors, and new developments in the behavioral sciences outside education. Each weekend is divided into eight phases as follows: (1) didactic input with the topic related to the field of counseling; (2) synthesis and discussion of didactic input with small‐group interaction; (3) participant problem solving with small‐group interaction; (4) group problem solving with large‐group discussion and synthesis; (5) didactic input with the topic relevant to counselor education; (6) synthesis and discussion of didactic input with small group interaction; (7) didactic input with the topic being behavioral science developments outside education; and (8) synthesis and discussion of didactic input with small‐group interaction. A leadership approach applicable for counselors and guidance directors is presented. Videotapes of groups that were given leadership problems were informally studied and a number of dimensions identified that would help counselors in developing a leadership approach appropriate for their situations. The importance of counselors recognizing that leadership skills are different from counseling skills is key to department or unit accomplishments. The importance of first estimating the maturity of the group to accomplish the task is essential in using the correct combination of task‐oriented behavior and relationship‐oriented behavior.
