摘要:
Radical changes in contemporary society are altering the lives of individuals in pervasive ways. Counselors are typically oblivious to these revolutionary changes due, in part, to inadequate and outdated professional education. Counseling viewed as a complex of social‐psychological processes — as an applied behavioral science — needs the powerful framework provided by a “systems approach.” A system is viewed as a structure which functions as a whole due to the interdependence of its parts. A systems approach in counselor education emphasizes how specific training components can be combined most effectively and efficiently to produce outcomes stated in terms of trainee behaviors (performance). Basic characteristics of a systems approach include: (a) behaviorally stated performance objectives; (b) careful attention to relation of components; (c) information flow and feedback mechanisms; and (d) man‐machine combinations. Models such as flow charts and simulation techniques are also typically involved. A systems approach, it is argued, will encourage the asking of more relevant and answerable questions. Although it may be viewed by some as too scientific, mechanistic, or complicated, a systems perspective holds the promise of more effectively preparing counselors for contempor

摘要:
Coached client methodology can be an important resource in the education of student counselors by simulating a counseling experience with a standard client stimulus before actual counseling is begun. The authors carried out the following procedures for establishing and maintaining standard client consistency: (a) development of a general concept of the content of the client's role; (b) incorporation of specific information about the coached client in a cumulative folder to be used by the counselor; (c) development of specific client statements as essential aspects of the client's role; (d) training the coached client to incorporate all essential statements into his role; (e) assessment of client consistency across interviews with different counselors. Research applications of coached client methodology were discussed as well as its use by schools in the hiring of counselors.Editor Abstract

摘要:
All who educate for the professions share certain common problems: (a) defining the professional's role in precise terms, (b) identifying the essential components to prepare him to function in that role, (c) developing these into an adequate program, (d) selecting good prospects for the profession, (e) appraising the adequacy of the program, and (f) encouraging the growth of professionals in practice. Because instruments available for screening prospective professionals are far from perfect, and using the data obtained from them tends to involve tough decisions, too many who educate for the professions tend to rely primarily on candidates' earlier academic records and measures of scholastic aptitude. Instead, they must continue to try to identify those unique factors which contribute to success in practice and develop measuring instruments, observation techniques, and/or standard interviews which can be used to predict success prior to admission to professional preparation programs. Finally, there can be no substitute for committed staff members who can teach, who care about their students as persons, who can encourage and excite learning, and who can do the necessary research to improve the quality of professional services.

摘要:
The historical concept of professionalism is questioned as a model for the future of ACES as an organization. Two major issues are raised. The first issue is the lack of clarity of purpose within ACES and counselor education. Counselor Education in ACES and APGA usually refers to school counseling. Questions are raised about the nature of ACES and the structure of APGA. The second issue speaks to the question of the social responsibility and role of a profession. It is suggested that counselor education has strong social responsibilities, including the possibility of opening new career patterns for the poor.
