摘要:
The functioning of 22 counseling and therapy practicum students on the dimensions of empathy, regard, genuineness, and concreteness was assessed over a 20‐week period. Predictions of growth were made on the basis of the level of functioning of individual supervisors and practicum instructors. It was found that those students with high‐level practicum instructors and high‐level individual supervisors showed significant growth. The students with high‐level practicum instructors and low‐level individual supervisors also showed significant gains but took a longer period of time to do so. Those students with low‐level practicum instructors and low‐level individual supervisors showed no growth on the

摘要:
The use of group sensitivity training within a counselor education program was studied. It was hypothesized that participation would have a positive effect on participant self‐concept, would increase the effectiveness of the participants in emitting the core dimensions of empathy, warmth, and genuineness during counseling, and would make the participants more effective in offering the core dimensions in counseling than would be members of a control group who did not receive such training. Members of a National Defense Education Act Institute for Counselor‐Consultants were randomly assigned to the treatment and control groups. Measurements consisted of a self‐report on self‐concept and independent ratings of audiotapes based upon the core dimensions. Counselor trainees' perceptions of inhibition while they were conducting interviews in differently monitored situations (audio‐, video‐, nonmonitor) were studied. The results clearly indicate that beginning counselors perceive monitoring to have an inhibiting effect upon their interview performance. This article presents a model and rationale for training specific counseling skills prior to the practicum experience. Recent research on counseling process and counselor behaviors is integrated into a pre‐practicum training laboratory with the following objectives: reducing social behavior inappropriate to professional counseling, learning to tolerate and use silence as a tool, learning to listen, learning to identify feelings through verbal and nonverbal communication channels, developing a repertoire of counselor responses and counseling strategies, and developing a professional self‐image. This study correlated scores on the Dogmatism Scale with ratings of levels of facilitative conditions offered during counseling for 30 graduate students in a beginning practicum situation. Trained judges rated the levels of empathic understanding, respect or positive regard, and facilitative genuineness the students provided to clients. Results disclosed no significant relationships among the variables under investigation. Several interpretations of these findings were discussed, and suggestions for future research were offered.

A Q‐sort was used to examine the self‐percepts and ideal self‐percepts held by counselors‐in‐training at the beginning and end of a quarter in which they received formal instruction. The aim was to determine the change, if any, as a result of instruction over this period of time. The results indicate no significant difference or change in perceptions of self and ideal self. Counselors and superintendents from Tennessee and Indiana were administered a semantic differential to compare their perceptions of counselor programs as reflected by counselor performance in 11 skill areas. Counselors rated their training programs higher than did the superintendents but did agree with the superintendents that the best counselor preparation was in educational counseling, pupil appraisal, public relations, and guidance program coordination. Counselors also agreed with the superintendents that better counselor preparation was needed in parental consulting, vocational counseling, and research.
