摘要:
An attempt was made to determine the role of the state director of guidance by surveying through a questionnaire professional personnel employed as supervisors or directors of guidance services in state departments of education. State directors of guidance services in each of the 50 states were asked to submit a copy of the job descriptions under which they were currently functioning. A total of 211 identifiable statements of role functions were received from 34 of the 50 State Directors. A final questionnaire containing 59 role function items was sent to 280 state directors and state supervisors of guidance services. 142 usable questionnaires were returned and recorded for use in this study. A high level of agreement was recorded. Seventy‐five percent of the respondents agreed on 79.7 percent of the role function items. Also, 69.6 of the role function items were determined to be administrative in nature while the remaining 30.4 percent were designated as developmental. The study tends to verify and substantiate much of what was accepted as general knowledge concerning the role of the state director of guidance service

摘要:
Assuming that the function of guidance is exercised by a TEAM composed principally of counselor, teachers, and principal, this article reports a study of university catalogues and state certification requirements to ascertain the extent to which teachers and principals are being prepared for their roles in this service. The survey shows that some universities and some certifying authorities recognize this responsibility, but that the majority do not.

摘要:
The sharp contrast between counselor preparation and professional practice is one of the most perplexing problems in the counseling profession. Most counselor preparation programs attempt to help prospective counselors acquire the skills, the attitude, and the commitment necessary to be helping persons. Too often, however, when the counselor takes a job in a school, he is unable to establish and maintain his helping position. Further, his effectiveness as a helping person may in fact diminish with time on the job. Some possible reasons for this condition include: (a) lack of a systematic approach, (b) regression to attitudes and concerns held prior to entering the profession, (c) conflict between needs of students and institutional demands, and (d) the tendency to set unattainable goals. These conditions contain several implications for the profession and suggest a reexamination of traditional emphases in counselor preparation.

摘要:
12 school counselors, former teachers who had been counseling no more than 2 years, were interviewed on how they experienced the processes of role change from teacher to counselor. Theoretical constructs from sociological research on role and reference groups were used in the analysis. Anticipatory socialization was found not to have been engaged in by the new counselors. Having been a teacher was found to be dysfunctional to the extent that (a) it gave rise to ambivalence between the two roles, (b) demanded change in perspective toward the student, the school system, and the teachers, and (c) caused conflict by the necessity of changing the compliance system used with students. Having been a teacher was found to be functional to the counselor role in understanding and working with counselees and teachers on student‐teacher problems. The dysfunctional aspects of having taught outweighed the functional aspects and inhibited positive identification with, as well as impeding adjustment to, the new role of counselo

摘要:
For some years the challenge of bringing greater sophistication to the area of counselor education has touched upon many interesting conceptualizations, one of which deals with cognitive dissonance. This paper is an exploration of the concept of cognitive dissonance as it is reflected through the seemingly conflicting roles of counseling and testing. To anticipate the potential interplay between such roles creates some speculations not only about what dissonance exists but about what might be done to bring two apparently discrepant cognitions into harmony.

摘要:
It was hypothesized that over a period of time the interaction between social work students and their field work supervisors would become similar and positive, based upon shared feelings and perceptions. The data presented tend to support this hypothesis. Stability in the student‐supervisor relationship was reached after a period of intensive interaction, and positive dyadic feelings increased as interaction increased. At initial contact there were negative correlations between students and supervisors scores on the perception and expression scales, but after two quarters of continued interaction, these correlations became positive and significant. Finally, it was demonstrated that the students' expressions and perceptions of the relationship became similar to those of their supervisors as time passe

摘要:
This paper identifies several kinds of counselor activity for which practicum experiences have been or are being designed. These include individual and group counseling, outreach consultation, supervision of practicum students, and the study of student development. The SSD practicum is seen as sensitizing and predisposing the personnel worker to view action research as a relevant and crucial part of counselor education.

摘要:
To help meet the need to educate school counselors in the broader aspects of their work, the application of simulation techniques is suggested. A rationale is provided with discussion centering on the following points: (a) simulation offers an opportunity to provide specific training emphases, and (b) simulation offers a way of providing a wide range of counseling and guidance experiences not easily obtainable under regular practicum conditions. Specific examples of simulation are described, including a case study, a PTA speech, a teachers' meeting, a counselor's day, and a school board presentation. Benefits for counselor education programs which can be realized from simulation experiences also are discussed. Rather than choosing actors to play roles it is suggested that practicing counselors, state department personnel, doctoral students, and counselor education faculty should participate in simulation activities. As role players, they will gain an appreciation of current trends in the education of counselors.

摘要:
46 graduate students who had indicated that their major interest was teaching were compared with 47 graduate students who had indicated that their major interest was counseling. All subjects were given five scales as part of their course work in educational tests and measurements. These scales yielded 32 subtests on which comparisons between the groups were made. The groups differed on six of the subtests. Three of the variables on which the groups differed were interest measures. A further comparison was made between the counselor candidates who had a practicum and those who had not. Little difference was found between these groups on the variables investigated.
