摘要:

The article reviews the need for a developmental conception as the aim of educational intervention. The rationale is presented and compared to the mental health treatment approach. A case is made for the importance of a primary prevention, an ego and moral development focus for the psychological education of pupils and young adults.

摘要:

After citing research indicating that competence is a necessary condition of mental health, this article defines cognitive competence as a crucial form of mastery, attempts to show how it develops, illustrates how mental health depends on this capacity, and briefly sketches out four conditions psychological education curriculums can provide for facilitating students' acquisition of cognitive competence.

The inclusion of elementary school guidance and counseling within the current structure of American education is questioned by an examination of the ACES / ASCA joint policy statement on the role and responsibilities of the elementary school counselor. It is suggested that the vagueness and abstruseness of most definitions of elementary guidance and counseling are largely attributable to a lack of conceptual roots in a subject‐matter discipline, developmental psychology, and the process of education. This article describes a curriculum and presents the research results of a primary prevention model which was designed to promote the personal growth of high school students and was unlike most high school remedial counseling models. The intervention served as an operational translation of cognitive‐development theory. After reviewing some of the major impediments to research in counseling and counselor education, the article presents a model for research particularly designed to assess developmental change in pupils. A system of formative evaluation and quasiexperimental design is presented, employing checks and balances as successive approximations to developmental growth.
