摘要:
The common core concept was presented as the vehicle for developing a more adaptive educational program for the counseling profession. The communication model developed was based on the assumption of common elements of role behavior for counselors across agency settings. The model also depends upon the explication of communication and information needs necessary for adequate functioning of the counselor across as well as within settings as the basis for curriculum content. An organizational structure for implementing the communication model was explicated in a training program setting to facilitate the implementation of the model.

摘要:
This article proposes that supervision of the counselor trainee be extended into the trainee's first employment setting following completion of his master's degree program. This extension would be of benefit to the producer (counselor training program), the product (counselor trainee) and the consumer (local school or agency). The proposed model is suggested as also being relevant to the training of counselor supervisors.

The relationship between intellective and non‐intellective variables and counseling competence was investigated by comparing student counselors rated as falling within the top 25 percent in overall competence at the end of an evaluation seminar with their counterparts rated in the bottom 25 percent. Competence was operationally defined as a composite of knowledge of counseling theories and techniques, knowledge of and ability to use test data in counseling, and counseling skill. Micro‐counseling techniques were used to train 10 beginning graduate students in communicating test results. Training emphasized listening and responding to cues given by the client, brief and concise statements about test‐related information, and relating the information to the client's experiences and needs. Training aids included programmed materials, brief videotapes of positive and negative models, role‐playing, and videotape feedback of the role‐playing and test interpretation sessions. Judges' ratings of trainees in the experimental group were significantly higher than their ratings for the 10 trainees in the control group. Client ratings of counselor effectiveness did not differ significantly for the two groups. Changes in clients' pre‐ and post‐test attitude scores and knowledge scores were statistically significant. Study was made of training impact of different electronic playback techniques on ratings of student counselor performance. Thirty‐two upperclass university females were randomly divided into four playback treatment groups: (a) audio‐video, (b) audio, (c) video, and (d) no playback received. Four underclass university females served as trained clients. All student counselors interviewed two different trained clients in two 20‐minute sessions separated by a playback treatment period. All sessions were recorded by television cameras. Trained judges rated the second interview using the Counselor Evaluation Inventory, Nonverbal Behavior Scale, and Audio‐Visual Counseling Scale. Two‐way analysis of variance was used to compare scores on criterion instruments. Results indicated no judged differences among the playback treatment groups, nor could discriminant rankings be made among the various playback methods. The literature indicates that little attention has been given to the in‐service education of counseling supervisors. This article describes such a program carried out by the New York State Employment Service and the University of Rochester. Three small groups (total N = 25) met periodically during one year. The group leader helped the members deal with practical, existing problems. He also related these to the theoretical concepts presented in prior institutes. Initial evaluation indicated very positive reactions by the supervisors. Discussion points out the utlization of this model for various types of counseling supervisor

In order to emphasize the development of skills in helping the culturally disadvantaged, graduate students were given practicum placement in a Department of Labor‐financed agency which gave counseling and employment training to disadvantaged youth. Students attended staff meetings, interviewed staff members concerning the work they performed, and discussed client contacts with caseworkers, in addition to interviewing agency clients. Increased awareness of problems, broadened conceptualizations, and expansion of interpersonal skills were seen as advantages of the practicum. This study compared follow‐up data for two groups of master's degree alumni of a counselor education program, one of which graduated before marked changes in the program occurred and the other thereafter. The questionnaire data represented 83.5 percent of the first group and 89.6 percent of the second. Findings concerning the instructional program, advisement, and library services showed significant improvement in appraisal reactions of alumni in six of 12 cases, some deterioration in one. equivocal results in another, and no change in four. Employment data showed an increase from 42 to 71 percent of alumni in counseling and guidance positions. Professional membership data revealed a significant trend toward identification with national organizations. Eighty‐two students who had been enrolled in year‐long NDEA Counseling and Guidance Institutes were followed up for a two‐year period concerning attitudes and values. Subjects were administered the Porter Test of Counselor Attitudes and the Study of Values. Students attitudes and values similar to those present at the onset of their program and similar to those present after they had been away from their program one year. Some differences were noted concerning end‐of‐institute responses. Changes occuring during the programs appear minimal.
