摘要:
The factors that influence the ability of the adolescent to participate in his own health care are discussed. The use of nursing process in including adolescents is built on Dorothea Orem's concept of self-care. Traditional developmental theorists are considered in explaining social and intellectual competence. Potential and limitation in assuming self-care are discussed. The article concludes with a variety of suggestions for planning adolescent care that is developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of individual adolescents.

摘要:
Postoperative nursing management of a child who has undergone surgery should be based on a thorough ongoing assessment. This article describes those areas of the assessment that are important while caring for the postoperative child. Key points to consider while assessing the child are also included. A flowsheet that is used consistently with each shift can aid the management. A flowsheet devised to be used by the nurse for the ongoing assessment process is provided.

摘要:
Millions of American children are playing and competing on basketball, football, soccer, tennis, baseball, swim, and wrestling teams. Organized sports participation has become an integral part of a child's developmental experience. Children generally enjoy participating on teams, but injuries do occur. This article will focus on frequent sports injuries sustained by children during practice and competition, the injury potential of sports, and the etiology, prevention, and treatment of the injury. Items necessary for the“team medical bag”for initial treatment of sports injuries is also discussed.

摘要:
Sports physicals probably do not differ appreciably from routine physicals in actual practice. The sports examination is a unique assessment requiring the careful attention of the health care provider to specific data that contribute to a more complete assessment of the child's readiness to participate in and compatability with a given sport. The tool designed herein is presented to assist each health care provider in making such assessments and to document pertinent findings.

摘要:
Insertion of a gastrostomy tube is the intervention of choice for many children who are unable to take oral feedings. The Malecot and Foley balloon catheters are the two gastrostomy tubes most commonly used. Once the tube is in place, it is the goal of nursing care to maintain the patency of the tube, prevent iatrogenic damage, and insure safe, accurate delivery of feedings once they are initiated. In addition, the nurse must help the parents accept and bond with their infant while learning to care for the tube. The infant's normal stimulation needs must also be met. A summary of the nursing care necessary to achieve these goals is presented.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to investigate an assessment plan through which significant problems with breast feeding could be identified in the first 2 weeks of infancy. Following routine in-hospital counseling by a nurse-practitioner, 21 primiparous mothers were phoned at 6 days postpartum and seen at an office visit at 14 days. Weaning before 8 weeks was associated with the mothers′early expressions of low satisfaction with breast feeding and/or the number of problems perceived by the mother. Such problems were identified an average of 4 weeks before weaning began. The authors conclude that through early screening, potential breast-feeding problems can be identified early—while the mother is still working to establish lactation and while there may still be opportunity to provide her with additional counseling.
