摘要:
If nurses are to be active in health promotion, maintenance, and education, they must be active in the resolution of the burn problem by educating themselves and others. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' knowledge of burn care, fire safety. and burn prevention. More specifically, the study seeks to determine which nurses use fire safety and burn prevention information in their practice. Three-part questionnaires including demographics, knowledge base, and a utilization section were distributed to 100 nurses. The 88 (40 pediatric burn, 30 pediatric nonburn and 18 adult nonburn) returned questionnaires were analyzed. Findings showed that nurses who care for burn patients do have a greater knowledge base, followed by pediatric nonburn nurses and then adult nonburn nurses. More nurses teach burn prevention than those who do not. Of those nurses who do not teach it, the most were from the adult nonburn group. The contributing causes for not teaching, identified by all three groups, were lack of knowledge and educational materials. Available educational programs and burn articles need to be sought out and used. burn prevention conferences could be held by hospital inservices and/or as CEU programs. Nurses must continually be alert to the need for burn prevention knowledge and intervention.

摘要:
Inhalation injury is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in burn injury in all age groups. The injury may occur alone or in combination with surface bums or other trauma. Exposure to fire conditions produces violent response in the respiratory system. This paper focuses on the incidence and pathophysiology of inhalation injury in children. The nursing care at the scene, in the emergency department, and in the intensive care unit are presented in depth. The ICU aspect is discussed in the form of a nursing standard. Long-term complications are also considered. The nursing care of these children is complex. It can be viewed as both a science and an art.

摘要:
The management of a burn unit requires the leadership and cohesiveness of the burn team in order to maximize the team approach applied in burn care. A major part of the management of the burn unit is provided by the nursing service. Key to the smooth operations experienced by staff, patients, and families is the dual abilities of nurses in middle management positions. The diversity of personnel working in the bum unit combined with their dedicated interests contribute to the success experienced in the burn units, as they continue to improve and apply the principles of burn care management.

摘要:
The overall goal of nursing practice with families of spina bifida children is to engage them in the process of maximizing their potential for healthy living. The birth of a child with spina bifida precipitates an avalanche of challenges to a family's health. Parental fears and anxieties following the birth must be effectively resolved. If left unresolved, they can interfere with the development of healthy parent-child and marital relationships. Families require more than only time, and the nurse is in a pivotal position to help them adapt. The nurse has extensive knowledge and skills for addressing the family's concerns effectively. Guided by a conceptual framework for practice, the nurse assesses the family dynamics and coping skills as well as the family's social support system, in order to identify family strengths, concerns, and problem areas. Nursing interventions are directed at the family's cognitive, behavioral, and affective levels of functioning. Since living with spina bifida is a family venture the nurse engages in regular meetings with the couple, thus fostering a pattern of sharing that might prevent future family problems. The nurse helps the family develop coping skills and supports to enable both the family and the child to grow as normally and healthily as possible.

摘要:
Mother-infant interactions during feeding sessions were examined in this study. Two nurse-observers visited 78 primiparae and their infants at 55–70 hours, two weeks, one, two, four, and six months after birth. Mother and infant were observed to assess the contribution of each partner of the dyad to the interaction. Results not only showed the tremendous potential for adaptation of both partners and the specific contribution each brought to the interaction, but also shed doubt on the validity of early evaluation of mother-infant interactions. The great improvement in the interaction over the first two weeks and the lack of correlation between first and second observation would indicate that evaluation of the interaction at two weeks would afford a better opportunity to detect possible problems. Findings also showed higher scores at the first observation for dyads who had the opportunity to breastfeed immediately after birth. Demographic data, baby's sex, and several perinatal factors did not affect interactions of these healthy, mostly middle-class subjects.
