摘要:
In pediatric nursing practice, the potential exists for cognitive dissonance between child and nurse. Our application of developmental theory, especially that related to cognitive development, e.g., Piaget, has failed to consider that communicable disorders may develop as a result of the interaction of a nurse and a child who may be at very different stages of cognitive maturation. The ability to comprehend and communicate with the child is essential to achieving maximal desired therapeutic outcome. As in other human interactions, communication is an important component of pediatric nursing practice. This article will review the existing sociodramatic tools utilized to facilitate communication in pediatrics and proposes a new tool, poetry play, to promote greater communication between the nurse and children.

摘要:
Although the preschool years have been identified as an ideal time for teaching children about health and for establishing positive health beliefs and behaviors, little research has been carried out on health education for young children. The major purpose of this descriptive study was to determine how parents and clay-care teachers perceived the methods that they used to provide health education for preschool-age children. The data were collected using guided interview schedules developed by the investigator. The total sample was composed of 34 day-care teachers and parents with preschool-age children enrolled full time in five day-care centers in Seattle, Washington. The teaching methods of role modeling, discussion, audiovisual aids, reading materials, field trips, and games were investigated in the areas of physical, mental, developmental, dental, and nutritional health education. Role modeling was the most popular method used by both parents and teachers. Health professionals were not perceived to be a major influence on children's learning about health. As patient education is considered a primary function of nursing, pediatric nurses in offices and clinics should take a leading role in health education for preschool-age children. With an accessible population of young children in day-care centers, what better place for nurses to get involved in health education?

摘要:
Advances in the specialty of pediatric oncology have significantly improved the prognosis of children with cancer. Since their disease is no longer imminently fatal, their families must face the challenge of coping with a life altered by cancer, its sophisticated treatment regimen, and the accompanying uncertainties the disease brings. Most of the literature focuses on the impact of the illness on the sick child and the parents, rarely mentioning its effects on the healthy siblings. However, the well brothers and sisters are in a unique position, often being the primary target of family disequilibrium. Therefore, this article takes a developmental approach in describing the siblings' perspective, identifying their characteristic responses and special needs. Specific recommendations aimed at promoting the well siblings' adjustment are offered; health care professionals can play an important role in helping parents better understand the types of feelings, behaviors, and stresses experienced by the healthy siblings.

摘要:
There is considerable interest in the self-care and health behaviors of individuals. This article discusses the concepts and ideas underlying the philosophy of a project developed to help school-age children use health knowledge to develop their health behaviors. The authors believe that contacts school nurses have with children can produce increased understanding and attention to health needs. For children to accept personal responsibility for health they must experience 1) health education that allows the child to learn about the body and how personal behavior affects health; 2) health services that are focused on health rather than illness; and 3) a delivery system that enables the child to understand how his own behavior impacts on his own health and illness status.

摘要:
The nursing literature and the school health literature is filled with theoretical and clinical articles about the“role”of the school nurse. Yet, how the school nurse can function in such a way as to help the student achieve his/her potential for participation and responsibility in personal health and illness behavior is not so obvious. The authors have attempted to provide a framework for clinical practice in the school setting and have used anecdotes to illustrate how the role of the school nurse might influence the health behaviors of students.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to identify and compare child-rearing practices concerning children with chronic illness as compared to their siblings and to answer the following question: What are the differences in combined patterns of child-rearing when compared to child-rearing patterns of fathers and child-rearing patterns of mothers where there is one child in the family with chronic illness? The sample was the available population of parents who had two children between the ages of 4 and 14, one of whom had a chronic illness and sought health care iri a large, private family practice. Nineteen parent pairs were selected. Each parent was asked to fill out two Child-Rearing Practices Questionnaires (CRPQ). One questionnaire related to the child with chronic illness and one related to the sibling. The following four factors were used in the analysis: factor I, use of punishment vs. reason; factor II, promotion of independence vs. dependence; factor III, levels of rules of behavior; and factor IV, amount of spouse involvement. Factor VII was used to check motivational distortion.A multiple analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to test the hypothesis. There was no significant difference in child-rearing practices related to health status of the child. Interaction between sex of the parent and health status of the child produced no significant difference. There was a significant difference,p=. 05, between mothers and fathers on factor IV, amount of spouse involvement. Fathers saw mothers as more involved in child-rearing than mothers saw fathers. Factors I and VII were inversely correlated in mothers of children with chronic illness. The mothers were more inclined to distort their answers when they used punishment.

摘要:
The increasing popularity of using breast milk for the sick infant has necessitated statement of a hospital feeding procedure. A major cause of concern when administering expressed breast milk is the potential of delivering pathogenic organisms to an already ill infant. Expressed breast milk, which is universally contaminated with maternal skin flora, has time-limited ability to suppress growth of these organisms. The bacteriostatic activity of breast milk is further compromised by storage procedures that are dictated by a regional approach to perinatal care that often separates infant from mother. This article presents rigid guidelines for providing bolus and continuous breast milk feeds, supported by rationale, that will minimize risk and maximize the beneficial aspects.
