摘要:
In addition to functioning as the primary care giver, the pediatric nurse has an important role as the liaison between the child's home/family and hospital/medical professionals. The nurse must meet the child's total nursing care needs while he or she is hospitalized and remain available as a health educator. The child's transition from hospital to home is made easier when written instructions are given at discharge and follow-up phone calls are made in selected cases.

摘要:
Although a parent may be able to plan meals for a preschooler according to the four food groups, he or she may be unable to get the child to eat them. To provide successful diet counseling to the person caring for a preschool child, a nurse needs to discuss not only what to feed the child, but how to feed the child. In fact, what is often considered a child's eating problem may actually be a caregiver's feeding problem. In this article we will provide some answers to commonly encountered questions about getting children to eat. This information is based on our experience in working with advanced nursing students in community settings.

摘要:
While it is true that good nursing care, like all good health care, is in large part dependent on effective communication between the nurse and the patient, difficulties can arise when the need to communicate or obtain information about a minor patient's condition or treatment conflicts with the patient's right of privacy and/or the rights of the patient's parents or guardian. Unfortunately, this topic is too complex to lend itself to a simple explanation. Therefore, rather than attempt a general discussion of the legal concepts at issue, it is more efficient to break the topic down into a series of questions touching on issues that arise frequently.

摘要:
Sickle-cell anemia is a genetic disorder characterized by abnormal hemoglobin. One out of every 500 black children in the United States is affected by this disease. Eight to ten percent of the black population has the sickle-cell trait. While other hemoglobinopathies have been identified that also produce erythrocyte sickling and destruction, the discussion here is limited to sickle-cell anemia (Hb SS disease) and sickle-cell trait (Hb SA disease).

摘要:
Acute epiglottitis is a highly lethal disease characterized by acute respiratory distress leading to airway obstruction. Healthy children between the ages of 1 and 5 years are most commonly affected, although the disease may also be seen in adults. For an unknown reason, the disease is more prevalent in males. It is more common during the winter months, but may occur at any time of the year.

摘要:
The case history cited illustrates the diverse problems related to deficiency of folic acid. Even though this deficiency is unusual, it may occur when unsupplemented goat milk is used for infant feeding. Folic acid deficiency severely hinders cell replication and hemoglobin production. The clinical picture demonstrates the variety of pathological findings related to folic acid deficiency. The remarkable improvement in the infant following administration of folic acid illustrates the crucial role of a single nutrient in the promotion of growth, maintenance, and repair.

摘要:
Developmental disabilitiesis an umbrella term used to designate a broad range of severe, long-term problems that arise in children from the prenatal period through age 21. Often, children's adaptive responses to their environment and those in it are altered. More precisely, terms such asmental retardation, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and those for other congenital or neurological problems designate diagnostic categories that fall under this heading.

摘要:
A couple's desire to have or not have children can be based on a number of factors. Parents or potential parents may perceive children as having both economic and noneconomic value. Noneco-nomic values correspond to the psychic satisfactions that parents may derive from children. These noneconomic advantages can be divided into the following eight categories (1, pp. 1-4)

摘要:
Incest and its accompanying taboo have been much discussed since tribal times. Sigmund Freud, inTotem and Taboo, was one of the earliest theorists to discuss the psychological impact of the taboo and its violation. Our topic is father-daughter incest. There are pockets of people within our culture who would promote father-daughter incest as healthy for the daughter's sexual development; in Sweden, a sexual relationship between an adolescent over age 18 and her father is not considered“incestual”under the law but is considered legally to be sexual behavior between consenting adults. Our bias is that father-daughter incest is exploitative of the child; a well-thought-out presentation of this view can be found in Finkelhor (1).
