摘要:
A review of the pediatric literature on pain and stress reducing strategies is followed by a description of a breathing management and relaxation technique. Its use as a pain coping method is illustrated by two cases on a pediatric service. The positive responses of stress affected patients suggests that this approach can be effective in reducing feelings of panic and anxiety as a reaction to pain and the anticipation of pain.

摘要:
Munchausen Syndrome by proxy as a form of child abuse is appearing with greater frequency in the literature. It is essential for pediatric nurses to know this form of child abuse and to aid in early detection, diagnosis, and intervention. The purpose of this article is to present a model of care to assist nurses in detecting and managing affected children and their families.

摘要:
Hypercholesterolemia is a problem not only shared by many adults but also by their children. It has been hypothesized that fatty streaks in the aorta may be established by 10 years of age, thus aiding in the process of calcification later in life (5,17). Autopsy exams on young U.S. soldiers killed in Viet Nam and Korea revealed coronary calcification in 45-77% (5,17). Pediatric nurses can do much to assist both parents and their children in learning the appropriate diet and exercise regimen necessary to help reduce the cholesterol-heart disease risk in identified children.

摘要:
Despite the fact that many children are cured from cancer, this illness remains the leading cause of death among children due to disease. When the likelihood of death is confronted, decisions regarding how best to provide care must be made. Research regarding what factors influence this choice and the effects that different modalities of care may have on the family system are discussed. This discussion and review of the literature will assist the pediatric nurse in guiding the family to an appropriate choice for me care of their child. Pediatric nurses must be aware of the many technical, economic, and theoretical issues which confront a family prior to making this very difficult decision.

This article describes a very uncommon phenomenon that can result from surgery to correct gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Although, GER is a common illness in infants, the methods of management and nursing care are diverse. Review of the literature on GER and dumping are discussed and a case study of a girl with dumping following a fundoplication is presented.

摘要:
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is estimated to occur in 1 in 8,000 to 20,000 live births. Newborn screening identifies these children and proper dietary management changes the course of their lives from mental retardation to normal intelligence. However, there are many factors that influence whether the family and the person with PKU will cope satisfactorily with this lifelong condition. Interdisciplinary teams often assist the family and client with this process. As a member of the team the nurse assumes a counseling and teaching role. That role, following a developmental perspective, is presented in this article.
