摘要:
Nurses see themselves as the ones who offer comprehensive health care to the families of chronically ill children in hospital. But on what basic knowledge about parents' needs do we plan our care? A study of hospital-related stress for parents of chronically ill children reveals parents' perceptions of their stress and ways that the nurse can alleviate the stress by responding to the needs of parents.

摘要:
Numerous aspects of hospitalization are inherently stressful to young children. The stress immunization techniques of systematic desensitization, cognitive rehearsal, and modeling can be used by nurses to promote behavioral and cognitive controls in pediatric patients, thereby reducing the child's level of stress.

摘要:
Preparation of children and families facing cardiac surgery is an essential nursing function. As pediatric nurses, we must be concerned about facilitating the child's emotional adjustment to hospitalization as well as assisting his/her parents to successfully cope with the many stressors placed on the child. In order to be effective in alleviating the child's anxieties and relieving parental fears, the nurse must be equipped with a thorough knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology; the usual preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative routines; and normal growth and development of children.Components of the preparation process include (a) preparation by the nurse, (b) assessment of the child to family, and (c) formation of an individualized teaching plan. Methods for achieving these goals will be discussed.

摘要:
Because of the diversity in pediatrics, both in services offered, people served, and preparation of its health care members, it is difficult to have a universal definition of pediatric social illnesses. However, the trend is to include child abuse, neglect, failure to thrive, accidents, and poisonings in this category of illness. Nurses try to work with children and families to help them to grow emotionally and socially as well as physically. Through adaptation of the many programs currently available nurses stress the concepts of individuality and cultural variation, even when working with groups of children. To be more effective in meeting the challenge of pediatric social illness nurses are recognizing the need for enlarging health goals. Nurses are having to develop a broader base in their assessing, interviewing, counseling, teaching, supporting, providing physical care, referral, and advocating skills in order to meet the emerging needs of these children and their families.
