摘要:
Hospitalized children of all ages and stages need the care of concerned knowledgeable pediatric nurses who can give them opportunities to master or have some control over what is happening to them during the stress of illness or surgery. The developmental theories of Sigmund and Anna Freud, Erikson, and Piaget explain the developmental processes that document the need for this specific nursing approach. The basic preparation of the professional nurse must include education about child growth and development and the practical implications for child care. The concept of mastery must be introduced into the nursing care of hospitalized children. Examples are given of how the nurse may promote and facilitate the child's attempts to master and exert control over the situations that occur during hospitalization. The theories of Freud, Erikson, and Piaget are used to explain the hospitalized child's behaviors at various ages and stages. Specific nursing interventions that will assist the child in his/her efforts at mastery, at a particular level of development, are suggested and identified. Questions are raised concerning the needs of parents and pediatric nurses as well as hospitalized children for mastery or control of the events that are peculiar to hospitalization. The suggestion is made that well children can be given learning experiences to help them prepare for mastery in the event of hospitalization, as well as in the everyday events encountered in the process of normal growth and development.

摘要:
The article discusses the crucial differences between recurrent infant apnea and sudden infant death. Growing home use of respiratory and cardiac monitors on sleeping infants necessitates greater sophistication in nurses' knowledge of these two syndromes. Historical review, key distinctions, current research and implications for teaching and nursing practice are included.

摘要:
Dentistry for children is perhaps the most needed and yet most neglected area of dental services. In spite of its extreme importance, some health professionals are prone to discount its values. Inadequate or unsatisfactory dental treatment during childhood may cause permanent damage. With proper individual, professional, and community care, much of the oral disease present today could be eradicated.

摘要:
Ten physically disabled children participated in a four-week physical education program devised by six graduate nursing students. Breathing exercises, swimming, competitive sports, and music classes were included in the activities. Various preprogram and postprogram measurements were obtained on each child in order to detect any significant improvements. Due to the short time period, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and weight did not change; however, expiratory effort did improve significantly—from a mean rate of 81.8 liters/min before the program to 115.4 liters/min after the program. We believe that further research into the physiologic effects of exercise on disabled children may reveal definite benefits in terms of cardiovascular and respiratory function.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to ascertain those behaviors and persons that were perceived as emotionally supportive by breast-feeding mothers prior to and following the birth of their babies. An interview schedule was administered to 27 breast-feeding mothers from a large metropolitan hospital one month after their postpartum stay. The two categories identified by the researcher from the mothers' descriptions of emotional support were behaviors and adjectives. Persons identified as most supportive were husbands, mothers' parents, and friends. Other relatives demonstrated lesser degrees of support. Health professionals were found to be the least supportive by the mothers. Psychological support factors greatly outweighed the physical aspects of support both prenatally and postnatally, although there was a slight increase in physical support factors during the postpartum period. Over half of the mothers (60%) did not perceive themselves as receiving adequate emotional support in their decision to breast-feed. These mothers found support lacking in such areas as encouragement, information, and assistance with breastfeeding techniques.
