Although the detrimental effects of divorce on the immediate family have been studied extensively, few researchers have focused on how extended family members such as grandparents respond. This ex post facto study was a preliminary investigation of how 47 grandparents felt about their relationship with grandchildren whose parents had divorced. Chi-square analysis of study data revealed that these grandparents perceived a significant decline in the quality of their relationship with grandchildren. The quality of these grandparent-grandchild relationships was influenced by custodial arrangements but not geographic distance. Implications for pediatric nursing are discussed.

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening, chronic illness, the taken-for-granted world of the child's parents is destroyed. From that moment on, they must learn to manage life under very uncertain conditions. The findings reported here are from a more comprehensive grounded theory study that sought a plausible explanation for parental behavior under conditions of sustained uncertainty. This report describes the emergence of uncertainty as a multidimensional concept that permeates every aspect of family life following the diagnostic announcement. The noncategorical nature of the dimensions of uncertainty found in all life-threatening, chronic childhood illnesses provides a strong argument for preparing nurses in specialties that are conceptually, rather than medically, based.

This article explores the use of J. S. Bruner's theory of instruction as it relates to preprocedural teaching and anxiety in children. The primary concept of the theory is representation, which is the ability to combine past experiences with current stimuli to translate an event into a model of the world. The enactive, iconic and symbolic modes are different stages of representation. Bruner's theory is compared with different levels of childhood development. From this comparison, a model for instruction is presented. Nurses can use this model for instruction to decrease children's anxiety concerning procedures. It directs nurses to combine a child's current developmental level with an appropriate teaching strategy and guides them in decreasing their clients' preprocedural anxiety levels.

The purpose of this exploratory-descriptive pilot study was to explore the use of photography to examine the meaning of health among adolescents who have been diagnosed with cancer. The sample consisted of 4 adolescents who had been diagnosed with cancer and were attending a weekend retreat. Participants were given Polaroid(tm) cameras with instructions to take pictures that illustrated health. The participants were then interviewed to obtain an understanding of how their pictures demonstrated health. The participants produced 22 pictures and 35 descriptive expressions of health, which were content analyzed for common themes and elements. The meaning of health held by these adolescents may have implications for influencing their adherence to cancer treatment regimens as well as other health behaviors that promote or risk their health.

Play therapy allows children with developmental and health disabilities to discover what physical and emotional strengths they have in relation to their disabilities. Play therapy may be directive or nondirective, emotionally or physically focused. Suggestions for specific activities are presented for providing play therapy for children with disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among selected demographic and psychosocial family characteristics and family functioning and to identify which combination of variables best predicts family functioning when a child has attention deficit disorder. Seventy-six mothers and 47 fathers from 79 families participated in the study. The target child had been previously diagnosed with attention deficit disorder either with or without hyperactivity and aggressive symptoms. A significant correlation between family functioning and age of the hyperactive child was supported. Families of older children reported poorer functioning, and parenting competence was negatively related to parental perception of the child's behavior. Older age of the child in combination with higher levels of impulsivity/hyperactivity were significant in predicting family functioning.
