摘要:
Little research has been done on how school-age children perceive health. In this article, the author describes a study focused on how school-age children perceived healthy and unhealthy children. Findings showed that school-age children perceived health from a multidimensional perspective. Some of the study findings were congruent with findings from four other studies. Implications for nursing are addressed.

摘要:
Typologies of nursing diagnosis generally focus on potential or actual deficit states. In this article a research-generated typology of nursing diagnoses for healthy school-age children is presented that was developed from a study on the perceptions of school-age children regarding health.

摘要:
Approximately 12 million (48%) of our nation's adolescents are sexually active. One-fifth of 15-year-old girls and one-third of 15-year-old boys have already experienced intercourse. Adolescents' motives to be sexually active and to use contraceptives is explored from the sociological, developmental, and motivational perspectives. Societal norms for maidenhood and public policy regarding minors are examined for their proscriptions relative to premarital sexual activity. Empirical findings on factors associated with contracepting are discussed. Factors influencing nursing interventions and nursing's role in adolescent health care are also explored. Emphasis is placed on the need for nurses to facilitate communication between adolescents and their parents as well as to assist adolescents in making responsible decisions, thereby minimizing the consequences to sexual risk taking.

摘要:
The child with end-stage renal disease who must undergo dialysis treatments poses nursing problems and concerns. This article reports the findings from a descriptive study that investigated children's responses to dialysis. The sample consisted of 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls, aged 9 to 15 years, whose illness necessitated peritoneal and/or hemodialysis. Their behavior indicated a mourning response to losses they encountered as a result of illness and the concomitant treatment. How the child and family as well as nurses deal with the concerns and problems is discussed.

摘要:
Self-concept is the single most important factor affecting behavior. Adolescence is a particularly critical period in which the self-concept is forming. Illness and hospitalization during this period can interfere with the adolescent's ability to achieve developmental tasks. The potential loss of independence and subjection to multiple traumatic experiences (both physical and psychological) that accompany hospitalization can be detrimental to the adolescent's ability to gain and maintain self-esteem. This article discusses some approaches that can be used by health-care professionals to assist adolescents in improving or maintaining their level of self-esteem while hospitalized.
