摘要:
This study examined the relationship between knowledge of burn prevention and emergency treatment and risk-taking attitudes. The sample consisted of 12 female and 4 male adolescents aged 11–15 years. This descriptive study used a questionnaire examining knowledge of bum prevention, burn prevention practices in the home, and risk-taking attitudes. The overall mean score and standard deviation for the knowledge score, as well as the scores for the specific burn concepts, were analyzed. The practices in the home scores were examined in relation to the knowledge scores. Specific concepts were evaluated in regards to conforming to safe burn prevention practices in the home. An unsuccessful attempt was made to obtain information in regards to risk-taking attitudes that might result in a burn injury. The data show that this population does not have sufficient knowledge about burn prevention. The practices in the home score and the sources of burn prevention information tend to support Project burn Prevention's projection that members of the community should be exposed to burn prevention information by the media, community programs, and the classroom. There was noted to be a correlation between the knowledge of burn prevention score and the practices in the home score. If this study were to be repeated, the risk-taking attitudes section would be redesigned.

摘要:
Over the past year we have seen an alarming number of teenagers who choose burning as a method of suicide. These cases of self-immolation have all resulted in severe burns. The suicidal adolescent on the bum unit poses a special challenge for the bum nurse. Much time and energy must be devoted to meeting the psychological needs of both the adolescent and their family, within constraints of the bum I.C.U.This article will examine the history and risk factors associated with self-immolation. Three case studies of the adolescents we have seen and a sample nursing care plan will be presented. Nursing attitudes towards the self-immolator on the bum unit will also be identified.

摘要:
The majority of bums admitted to the acute unit are thermal in nature. If the cause of the bum is flame, hot water, or contact with a heat source, the extent of the injury is most times visible and measurable. Yet when an electrical bum patient is admitted to the unit the true extent of the injury may be invisible. This paper will present an overview of the mechanism of the electrical injury, and the nursing considerations in patient care.

摘要:
Despite the use of pain medication, relaxation techniques, and imagery; children and adolescents at the Shriners Bums institute in Boston, Massachusetts tell nurses that dressing changes are among the most excruciating aspect of their bum care. A series of three studies done there between 1981 and 1984 have shown that allowing a child to participate in his/her dressing change to whatever degree is safe and practical for that age group has dramatically reduced the psychological problems associated with this treatment. In addition, participation appears to have increased the patient's coping mechanisms during this procedure. This paper discusses this participation method, its background, and nurses' responses to it.

摘要:
To examine how the patient's pain affects the nurse, and how nurses' attitudes influence pain control, a survey was conducted among the members of the nursing staff at the Shriners Bums Institute, Boston, Mass., a 30–bed pediatric bum facility. This facility includes a 12–bed acute care unit and an 18–bed reconstructive surgical unit. Fifty-one percent (n = 27) of the 53 distributed questionnaires were answered, a significant number for such a sensitive subject. Most nurses agreed that patients experience varying degrees of pain ranging from mild to severe, depending on the type of bum, an individual's pain threshold, and the specific procedure performed on the patient. When asked to evaluate the efficacy of the prescribed doses of commonly used analgesics, 64% felt that the medication is often inadequate. When asked how the patients' pain affects them, 72% of the nurses responded with words such as“helpless,”“anxious,”and“terrible”to describe their feelings. As one nurse expressed,“It penetrates me to the core.”Overall, replies were consistent among survey participants despite significant differences in educational background, age, and years of experience in nursing and in bum nursing. The following report is an in-depth discussion of this survey.
