摘要:
The purpose of this study was to identify what adolescents consider beneficial about hospitalization for surgery and to examine the congruency between anticipated and actual benefits. Fifty-nine adolescents were interviewed prior to and following surgery. Four categories of benefits were described. The highest proportion of adolescents in the study either anticipated or reported expanding their social network as the most beneficial part of hospitalization.

摘要:
Meningomyelocele is a complicated condition of childhood, with a genetic influence. The child may have sensory-motor deficits that can be diminished by proper handling, positioning, and sensory stimulation provided by the use of appropriate toys and by interaction with adults.

摘要:
From early in the first year of life, an infant's play with objects and with people is a mirror of what the child knows. In addition, play behavior is correlated with language development and is related to the quality of mother-infant attachment. Because play is related to other aspects of development and because it is so readily visible, play assessment provides data nurses can use in practice and in research. This article (a) integrates research describing infant and toddler play, its correlates, and assessment techniques and (b) proposes applications of play assessment for practice and research.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to test the accuracy of scales used for weighing infants and young children and to identify sources of error. The sample consisted of 30 metric scales from three hospitals. The scales were of different types, mechanisms, makes, and age. The data was collected using a set protocol and a total of 430 weight readings were recorded. Criterion validity was determined by comparing readings from the sample scales with readings obtained on the Federal Government Standard scales in Ottawa, Ontario. Descriptive data were collected from the weighers. Criterion validity was analyzed usingttests. Results showed that accuracy decreased at the heavier weight levels. Interrater reliability was examined by the percentage of agreement between weighers: Agreement was found to be weaker at the heavier levels. Manufacturer or type of mechanism was not a significant factor in error. However, infant scales were more accurate than adult scales and newer scales more accurate at heavier levels. Content analysis of descriptive data showed that errors were caused by a combination of the nurse and the weighing mechanism. In conclusion, whenever extremely accurate weights are needed, it is recommended that an infant scale rather than an adult scale be used and that the newest or most recently calibrated scale be chosen.

摘要:
Community health nursing courses in baccalaureate nursing programs generally focus on the broad scope of community health nursing practice as defined by the American Nurses' Association. Demographic changes and changes in federal funding of health care and reimbursement practices have resulted in a decreased number of clinical practice sites that can provide nursing students with the broad range of community health nursing experiences compatible with the ANA's definition. Instituting a school health screening and health promotion program can reduce the discontinuity between community health nursing theory and the students' clinical experiences. The School of Nursing, University of Kansas, has developed a school health screening and health promotion program to provide a comprehensive setting for clinical practice and service to parochial schools in low-income urban areas. The authors here describe this program.

摘要:
The recent interest in child care certainly is not related to the fact that young children vote. It is directly related to the increasing numbers of parents, from both single-parent and two-parent families, who by economic necessity are entering the work force. It is a large budget item for families.
