摘要:
A preventive approach to health care in infancy to a large extent has been ignored despite its emphasis in adulthood. Breastfeeding provides infancy with a major health intervention. Recently published data is reviewed and summarized, giving evidence that breastfeeding provides more preventive health benefits than previously expected. Short-term benefits of breastfeeding include improved immunity, fewer gastrointestinal disturbances, allergy prevention, improved cognitive performance, and protection against parasitic enteric infection. Long-term benefits may include obesity prevention and the lowering of serum cholesterol levels in adulthood. Another major incentive for breastfeeding is the dramatic impact on the cost of infant health care. Hospital costs for breastfed infants are significantly lower than for nonbreastfed infants. These savings can be seen in all socioeconomic levels. A multisystem approach for promoting breastfeeding is recommended. Recommended changes include role modeling, education, revisions in hospital policies, supportive job policy, and new legislation that will enable breastfeeding to become established on a widespread basis. Breastfeeding has the potential of becoming a most significant preventive health intervention for infancy.

摘要:
Current literature indicates that the significance of the impact of serious childhood illness on family dynamics has been recognized by health care providers. Subsequently, there has been increasing emphasis on the prevention of secondary psychosocial problems, as well as on the need for holistic care. This paper reports a validity and reliability study conducted on an assessment tool being developed for use by clinicians to evaluate the psychosocial status of families having children with serious illnesses. It has potential for use as both a clinical and a research instrument. Clinical uses for the scale, in addition to the methods utilizedtoestablish validity and reliability, are discussed.

摘要:
Contrary to popular belief not all babies lose their baby fat. Indeed, obese children often remain obese adolescents and thus are predisposed to an impressive number of debilitating conditions including coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. In this paper current research findings regarding obesity are reviewed and health promotion measures to protect the child from obesity are suggested.

摘要:
Nurses need a theoretical base to guide their care. This article presents the utilization of Strauss's framework for understanding chronic illness as a basis for the development of a standard care plan designed to assist family adaptation to a child's chronic illness.

摘要:
Nonorganic failure to thrive is a pediatric social illness that can be treated in the home if it is identified early. Factors that contribute to this illness are varied but it is often the result of a faulty maternal-child interaction. In order to determine if the child's condition is organic or inorganic, several parameters need to be explored. Assessment factors and rationale are provided to assist in the evaluation of the child and family so that effective management can be instituted.
