摘要:
Little research has been conducted with school-age children regarding their health perceptions and their health concerns. In this paper, children's perceptions of health-related behaviors are described. Areas of health concerns for the school-age child are delineated. Gender and age differences are highlighted as appropriate for the health concerns.

摘要:
Severity and vulnerability as important constructs in the Health Belief Model were examined in school-age children. Cognitive development theory and sex-role socialization theory provided the bases for predicting age and gender differences. Nine hundred forty-six children in first, fourth, and sixth grade from seven schools in five states participated in the study. Severity and vulnerability in six categories of health problems were described. Analysis of variance revealed significant age and gender differences. Girls perceived that health problems were both more severe and that they were more vulnerable to them than boys. Age was significant on the vulnerability dimensions, although age patterns varied by health problems. Clinical and educational implications are discussed.

摘要:
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate the relationship between health and academic performance in school-age children. Comprising the sample were 124 children in third (n =69) and sixth grades (n =55). Health was defined and operationalized as a multidimensional concept and measured by examination of clinical health problems, behavioral health problems, and a subjective component using the Child's Health Self-concept Scale (CHSCS). Academic performance was measured with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Data for third- and sixth-grade children were analyzed separately using descriptive and correlational statistics. One indicator of health for each grade was significantly related to academic performance. In third-grade children, the number of sickroom visits was inversely related to academic performance (r=. 23;p=. 05). In sixth-grade children, the CHSCS scores were positively correlated with academic performance (r=. 34;p=. 01). Implications of these findings and others are discussed.

摘要:
A community analysis and research strategy called Project GENESIS is described in this article. Combining quantitative and qualitative research methods, Project GENESIS emphasizes the qualitative research strategy of ethnography. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the overall health of the aggregate of teenagers in a moderate sized town in northern Colorado. Data analysis revealed findings related to teen lifestyles, health and health services, substance abuse, and pregnancy. Recommendations to improve the health of teenagers based on the findings are presented. Implications of this type of research for school and community health nursing are discussed.

摘要:
The number of school-based clinics is rapidly increasing across the country. They are showing an encouraging amount of success both in reducing the number of teenage pregnancies and in improving the health of the adolescent population. Many aspects contribute to this success including the proximity of the clinic to the students, the educational component, and the comprehensive services provided. In addition, school-based clinics help the students achieve the normal developmental tasks, thus facilitating the adolescent's transition from childhood to adulthood. This article highlights an effective school-based clinic operating in rural Colorado using a fictional case study to illustrate the adolescents' point of view.

摘要:
Adolescent health is an area of increased programmatic activity and an area in need of further investigation. Research, however, may be fraught with problems that compromise the rigor of investigations. To illustrate this point, the author describes a small collaborative study that is in progress. The history of this study is clarified and the pilot work is summarized. The author stresses the importance of striking a balance between rigor and relevancy in studies related to adolescent health.

摘要:
Cardiovascular fitness among children has been shown to predict adult cardiovascular fitness. This study examined cardiovascular risk factors of 100 randomly selected adolescents, ages 15 to 18, in a suburban high school of a large western metropolitan city. Respondents were middle to upper-middle socioeconomic class and almost exclusively Caucasian.A survey was used to assess the prevalence of six cardiovascular risk factors in this adolescent sample. The six risk factors were family history of diseases associated with increased cardiovascular risk, smoking, lack of exercise, elevated blood pressure, obesity, and stress. The prevalence of these factors in the adolescent sample is reported using descriptive statistics. In addition, sex comparisons were made on the modifiable risk factors. The findings from this study were compared to national statistics. Implications of these findings are discussed.

摘要:
Few studies have addressed the cardiovascular risk factors in the context of family aggregates. This study focused on the assessment of cardiovascular risk factors in seven father-mother-son groups. Although the sample size precludes any generalizations beyond this sample, patterns of risk factors among the fathers, mothers, and sons suggest direction for future research in this area.
