摘要:
A pilot study based on the interdependence mode of the Roy adaptation model was conducted to evaluate interdependence needs in the new family. The interdependence mode consists of giving and receiving behaviors in the categories of significant other, support systems (friendships), support systems (extended family), and a person's experience of feeling alone. A questionnaire addressing these categories was administered to 10 newly delivered mothers on a family-centered maternity unit. The lower mean scores for the categories of extended family and feeling alone suggest the need for further evaluation in these categories. A foundation was laid for further study of interdependence needs and family nursing, but more research using larger, random samples is needed.

摘要:
Vygotsky's general theoretical framework of cognitive development is reviewed, including his concept of the zone of proximal development: the region of potential mastery lying between the level at which the child has the ability for independent performance and the level at which the child can master the task only with adult collaboration. Examples of the use of Vygotskian theory in nursing practice are provided.

摘要:
A study is presented of the reported cases of child rape in Benin City, the capital of Edo State in Nigeria. The conditions that make children, particularly females, more vulnerable to sexual abuse are explored. The organization of family life places children in a dependency cycle that makes rape both inevitable and invisible. Change that is responsive to family needs is more likely to have a positive effect in preventing child rape.

摘要:
Children often experience pain and anxiety during invasive procedures. Although parents are usually children's best supports during frightening and/or painful experiences, they may not know how to support their children during procedures in a health care setting. A videotape and accompanying booklet were developed to teach parents and children about nonpharmacologic techniques they can use to promote children's comfort. Ways in which these products are being used as well as plans for future use are discussed.

摘要:
A study was conducted to describe 12 female adolescents' oral contraceptive perceptions that were considered first independently and then after facilitation by a nurse. A self- administered decisional balance sheet elicited 44 descriptions of oral contraceptive perceptions, and a structured interview elicited 31 additional descriptions. The data were content-analyzed for common elements. The majority of participants perceived oral contraceptive benefits related to pregnancy prevention and others' approval and barriers related to side effects and others' disapproval. Participants considered additional oral contraceptive perceptions upon facilitation by a nurse after the opportunity for independent consideration. Facilitation of female adolescents' consideration of oral contraceptive perceptions may be an appropriate nursing intervention.
