Broadcasting is one renewable resource that has received little attention from geographers. Different segments of the broadcast spectrum display quite different space‐covering characteristics, and the regulation of signals that cross international boundaries is a matter of growing concern for the International Telecommunication Union. In this paper, spectrum management issues are examined for the am portion of the broadcast band in the southern Ontario region, am stations often have large but irregularly shaped coverage areas, especially at night. Spectrum saturation and the competition from American broadcasters pose problems for the region, not all of which can be solved with new technology.Le spectre des radio‐fréquences est une ressource naturelle renouvable a laquelle les gkographes ont accordé jusqu’à présent peu d'attention. Les différentes bandes du spectre ont des caractéristiques de portée bien distinctes et les réglements regissant les télécommunications internationales deviennent de plus en plus importants pour l'Union internationale des télécommunications. The pattern of decline in a mining region is examined using a case study of Schefferville. A critical examination is made of Lucas's model of youth to maturity in community development, and a further two stages are suggested ‐ winding down and closure of a town. The discussion centres on the characteristics of community and corporate winding down in Schefferville: the restructuring of the local workforce, disinvestment, relocation of capital, and company withdrawal from housing, municipal affairs, and public services.Les auteurs entreprennent une étude du processus de déclin dans les régions minikres en se servant de l'exemple de Schefferville. En partant d'une critique du modtle fait par Lucas sur les stages d’évolution et de maturation d'une communauté, les auteurs proposent d'y ajouter deux autres Ctages, soit celui de déclin et celui de la fermeture définitive d'une ville. Four air tanker location‐allocation models are considered as tools for suppression of forest fires. The models are tested and compared using forest fire data for Alberta. The results show that fire location patterns can vary considerably over the short term and that not responding to such variation by optimally relocating air tanker groups could be very costly in terms of losses to fire. We argue that an improved location‐allocation model can serve as the heart of an optimal air tanker relocation system and suggest the basic requirements for developing such a model.Quatre modèles localisation‐allocation pour avions‐citerne sont considérés comme des outils servant dans la lutte contre les incendies forestiers. Les différents modèles sont mis a l'tpreuve et comparts utilisant des données recuillies lors d'incendies forestiers survenus en Alberta. Les rtsultats obtenus montrent que les modèles de localisation de feu peuvent varier considérablement B court terme et que de ne pas se soucier de telles variations par une relocalisation optimale des groupes d'avions‐citerne pourait s'avérer trts couteux en terme de pertes dues aux incendies forestiers. Nous soutenons qu'un modtle localisation‐allocation amtliort peut constituer le coeur d'un systtme de relocalisation optimal pour avions‐citerne et suggérons les conditions fondamentales requises pour le dèvel

To facilitate the conversion of Indians to Christianity and to create centralized pools of exploitable labour, the policy ofcongregatiónin Spanish America aimed at producing an orderly pattern of nucleated settlement that contrasted greatly with the predominantly random and scattered arrangement of pre‐Hispanic times. Although the imprint ofcongregaciónpersists to this day, the operation of the policy in the Cuchumatán highlands of Guatemala was not without its failures and frustrations. A review of mid‐sixteenth‐centurycongregación, and of the reasons behind the subsequent process of settlement dispersal in the Cuchumatán region, forms the focus of discussion.Afin de faciliter la conversion au christianisme des Indiens, et dans le dessin de regrouper et de centraliser la main‐d'ceuvre exploitable, la politique de la congregación dans l'AmCrique hispanique visait à produire un modèle ordonné de repeuplement nucléé. SUMMARYThe overall pattern of home values in metropolitan Halifax has been strongly influenced by the early (mid‐nineteenth‐century) establishment of a prestige sector in the South End. This sector failed to develop outward due to the barrier of the Northwest Arm, which, paradoxically, was not bridged, since to have done so would have marred the original attraction of the sector. While nearly all ‘exclusive’ housing remains in pockets on or near the Arm, new prestige housing areas have been developed in the suburbs, wherever fine settings and the absence of wartime shacks allow. In particular, the presence of extensive ‘low‐value’ tracts south of Armdale has forced most new high‐value developments in Halifax to the north mainland.
