The issue of minority populations and linguistic change for anglophone and francophone groups in Quebec and Ontario is very important, affecting relationships between the groups and individual perceptions of social power. This paper begins an analysis of linguistic change in the transition or contact zone of bilingualism along the Quebec‐Ontario border in the period 1961‐86. Written in both languages, it describes changes in absolute numbers and percentage share of the total population of the minority group, anglophones in Quebec and francophones in Ontario. It defines regions of change, and, combining the two measures in a series of graphs, shows levels of change at the local level.

The current Israel‐Palestine peace process is expected to result in a final territorial solution and the ultimate formation of a separate Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. By all definitions, such a state would be small in terms of its population size, its areal extent, and its economic capacity. Given existing conditions, a West Bank and Gaza state would suffer from problems of structural scarcity as experienced by many other small states. This would be exacerbated were the boundaries of the new state with Israel to be closed, thus severing existing economic links. Drawing on models of small state behaviour, this paper studies the possible ways in which a West Bank and Gaza state could overcome these structural deficiencies in both the short and long‐terms, including full and independent control of the state's resources, investment in industrial and construction infrastructure, and through becoming an important regional and global gateway for the Arab world as a whole.

Data from the Santé Québec survey of 1987 are used in this article, together with a new model based upon the ambiosystem, ambiostasis, and ambiocontrol concepts; the objective is to uncover and explain the socio‐spatial health disparities existing in Québec. Results show that a low level of environmental control (ambiocontrol), corresponding to the combination of a complex environment and a low socio‐economic status, characterizes the most pathogenic milieu and seems to be a prime determinant of m

A dynamic urban model is used to study the post‐war evolution of the Atlantic Canada urban system. The computer‐based simulation model is calibrated for the period 1951‐86 and then employed to predict the 1991 population of each cma and ca within the system. The simulation results show that, to a large extent, the evolution of the system can be understood in terms of endogenous system dynamics rather than exogenous events. Specifically, competition among the cities of the region is a significant factor in the urban system evolution. The high degree of abstraction of the model means that data requirements for application are minimal, and the calibration procedure is relatively simple. The successful predictions show that the model can yield useful results in spite of its simplicity.

Glacier margin ice‐dammed lakes have been a common feature of the glacial landscape of the St. Elias Mountains of the southwest Yukon. The sedimentary successions in the lake basins contain a record of glacier hydrology variability and ice‐dammed lake fluctuations. The interpretation of the sedimentology depends on an understanding of glacierized basin hydrology and particularly the suspended sediment dynamics of glacier discharge streams. A basin on the north margin of the Dusty Glacier contained a lake at least three times during deglaciation from the maximum of the Little Ice Age. The sedimentary record is composed of fluvioglacial sand and gravel fades from periods of drainage of the lake and a number of lacustrine fades that contain evidence of water level fluctuations. The lacustrine fades consist of laminated silt, laminated silt and sand, and stratified silt and sand, which are indicative of variable sediment input on daily, intra‐seasonal, and seasonal time scales, but which are dominated by short time scale rythmites. The lake formed during surges of the Dusty Glacier and drained as the ice activity declined. Progressive downwasting of the Dustry Glacier at present indicates little potential for the lake to refill.
