A framework for incorporating the influence of cultural variability into theories of communication in interpersonal relationships is presented and several hypotheses derived from the framework tested. Data from two studies conducted with samples from Japan and the United States revealed that variation along Hofstede's (1980) dimensions of culture are related to intimacy ratings of relationship terms, as well as perceptions of the degree of personalization, synchrony, and difficulty of communication associated with relationships anchored by six specific terms(stranger, acquaintance, classmate, friend, best friend, and lover).Implications of the framework and findings for developing cross‐culturally generalizable theories of communication are elaborate

As an example of “culture‐specific” communication research, the present study investigated “self‐disclosure” during initial interaction within Japanese culture. Presented with a simulated conversation containing varying levels of self‐disclosure, a total of 192 Japanese males and females filled out several scale items measuring episode perception, social attractiveness and communication competence of the discloser, and strength of logical force. While respondents generally rated a low level of self‐disclosure positively, the results also indicated a significant dialogue‐by‐sex interaction effect on the episode and person perception variables. With regard to logical force, the results showed that the strength of prefigurative force varied little, except for cultural archetype‐act linkage, whereas practical force differed as a function of self‐disclosure level. This article discusses the theoretic underpinnings of a framework for the analysis of communication in ongoing social relationships. A set of studies that have investigated various aspects of the framework are summarized. The majority of these studies have tested the notion that communication between members of ongoing relationships generates a shared view of the world that bonds relationship members. Relationship members who have achieved this type of bond are referred to as symbolically interdependent. The remainder of the article presents results of a study of the relationships between symbolic interdependence and time spent talking in groups of premarital couples that were either separated geographically or living in close proximity. Results supported the hypothesis that this relationship would be stronger in the group of geographically separated couples. Implications of the study are discussed as well as future directions for research on the perspective.

This study examines the relationship between cognitive complexity and conversational recall. Three hypotheses are put forward arguing that individuals high in cognitive complexity will (a) recall more person‐oriented conversational information, (b) recall more person‐oriented information in an interference condition, and (c) recall more total information from a conversation than subjects low in cognitive complexity. A 2 × 2 factorial design was used to explore the process and outcome of small group problem‐solving discussions for two modes of communication (face‐to‐face and computerized conferencing) and two types of tasks (a qualitative human relations task and a scientific ranking test with a criterion solution). Interaction process was coded using Bales Interaction Process Analysis. There were two to three times as many communication units in the face to‐face groups consisting of five members each as in the computerized conferencing mode of communication during the same elapsed time. Group decisions were equally good in the two modes, but the groups were less likely to reach agreement in the computerized conferencing mode. Although previous studies of the foot‐in‐the‐door and the door‐in‐the‐face techniques of interpersonal influence have established the effectiveness of these sequential request strategies, communication researchers have not discovered an adequate conceptual framework for explaining their compliance‐enhancing properties. The present study tests the perceptual contrast explanation for sequential request efficacy. Previous tests of the effects of socially transmitted information have not provided strong support for a social information processing approach to the formation of work related attitudes and perceptions. This study proposes that the attention‐focusing effects of social information should be evidenced by unequal response variance and not necessarily in the typically hypothesized between‐group mean differences of previous investigations. Three separate assessments of informational influence on work environment perceptions were conducted on a sample of state government emloyees who were relocating to an open office environment.
