摘要:
This study investigated the influence of verbal organizational structure and verbal organizing skills on recall of facts, ability to pattern, and ability to problem‐solve. One hundred and fifty‐nine college students, classified as high or low in ability to organize verbal material, heard recorded communications that consisted of either high‐structure‐sequence or low‐structure‐sequence messages. The results indicated that level of message structure and organizing skills were conjunctively related to the learning variables, with structure apparently accounting for more of the variance than organi

摘要:
This study investigated patterned distribution of communication across time in an effort to assess temporal development in T‐groups through the use of verbal interaction measures. Two groups conducted with a “meaning‐attribution” facilitation style had their verbal interaction recorded as contiguous units of communication. Factor analysis of interaction categories produced nine dimensions labeled: Antagonistic, Assertive‐Supportive, Dominant Assertive, Aggressive‐Assertive, Assertive, Reactions to Group Laughter, Task‐Determining Activity, Reactions to Group Tension, and Supportive‐ness. Analysis of the cell means indicated three separate stages of group life could be extrapolated from the sequential distribution of interaction: Boundary‐seeking, Ambivalence,

摘要:
This study sought to determine what perceived characteristics discriminate between leaders and nonleaders in a small group situation. After interacting for three work periods, members of several groups evaluated one another on a source valence instrument containing measures of credibility, attraction, and homophily. During subsequent meetings, a computerized technique (PROANA5) was used to analyze group interaction and identify group leaders. Results indicated that three variables: task attraction, extroversion, and character provided reasonably accurate classifications of leaders and nonleaders. Findings were discussed in terms of Gibb's interaction theory of group leadership.

摘要:
While assuming that another's level of self‐disclosure, i.e., communication of intimacy, can be rewarding, it was hypothesized that the degree of intimacy of disclosure would be less powerful in affecting a recipient's attraction for a discloser than the positiveness or negativeness (valence) of disclosure. An experiment examined the effects of a male confederate's self‐disclosure (high or low degree of intimacy) on a recipient where the valence (positive or negative) of disclosure also varied. The 80 male and female subjects were assigned to one of four experimental conditions in a factorial design. It was found that recipients of disclosure demonstrated the greatest degree of attraction for the confederate when the content of the disclosure script was positive, regardless of the degree of intimacy of the disclos

摘要:
This paper reports the development of a measure of perceived homophily. In both an initial investigation and in four subsequent studies employing samples from diverse populations, four dimensions of response were observed. These dimensions were labeled Attitude, Morality, Appearance, and Background. Additional results indicated that opinion leaders are perceived as more homophilous than non‐opinion leaders on the dimensions of Attitude, Morality, and Background. The scales found to measure these dimensions are suggested for consideration by researchers concerned with homophily or interpersonal similarity in human communicatio

摘要:
Research evidence is presented to support a new and simple theory of attitude formation and change. This theory posits that the attitude of any individual converges over time on the arithmetic mean of the attitude‐pertinent information received by the individual. Consequently, the stability of an attitude is dependent on the number of messages out of which that attitude was formed. This formulation also implies that the emotional state or feelings of an individual and the degree of heterogeneity of influences to which he or she was exposed are unrelated to attitude change. Using a multi‐stage, multi‐time procedure, and instruments designed to detect and measure interpersonal influence, data provided by 135 high school students over a six‐month interval support these hyp

摘要:
A diffusion model was utilized to examine the failure of a school district to pass a bond issue. Precincts in the district were categorized as modern or traditional subsystems using structural descriptors of modernity. The degree of modernity of the social systems was found to be strongly related both to voting behavior and attitudes toward those who initiate and advocate change.

摘要:
This study examined laboratory‐induced spoonerisms; the type of speech error in which a phoneme unit from one word switches position with a phoneme unit from another word. Three experiments test hypotheses which assume that spoonerism errors are facilitated by the presence of certain inherent differences between the switched phonological units. Experiment I tests for facilitation based upon differences in the phonological markedness of the switched units. Experiment II and Experiment III test for facilitation based upon differences in the second‐order transitional probabilities and third order transitional probabilities (respectively) of the switched units. Evidence of transitional probability effects was found, with implications for the phonological encoding processing of both naturally occurring spoonerisms and normal spe
